Debating Success
Well done to our Year 8 Debate Team for their performance at round one of the Schools’ Mace Competition held at Carre’s Grammar School in Sleaford. They are now looking forward to round two of the competition which will take place in January.
Thank you to Megan B for her recount of the team’s success:
"On Thursday 21st of November the Year 8 Debate Team travelled to Carre’s Grammar School in Sleaford to debate against Skegness Academy to oppose building on the green belt (the green land around the seven main cities of England).
After spending time preparing at school we were ready to go. The team consisted of Megan B, Toby O, William C, Fergus V, Euan P and Charles B. The speakers were Megan as opposition speaker one, Toby as opposition speaker two and William as the opposition summary speaker.
When we got to Carre’s we found out we were the second debate of the three that evening.
As one of the teams was a swing team to work out the three teams that qualified, each team would get scored on presentation, diction and listening to the other team and replying.
After watching the first debate we knew that the standard would be high but all of our speakers spoke well.
All the teams were sixth formers apart from King Edward the VI’s who had brought a group of Year 10s and 11s.
Considering this we were very shocked but happy that St Hugh’s qualified for round two in January."
