Match Report written by the St Hugh's U11 Rugby Team
On Friday 15th November the Under 11 Rugby Team went to Stamford for the IAPS Rugby Festival. There were thirteen schools competing including us and St Hugh’s was significantly the smallest school. Thanks to Beau we managed to get up to nine players on our team.
Altogether we played six, ten minute matches back to back, with no subs. As you can imagine we had very tired legs on the way back.
Our first match was against Bishop Stortford, this was a school that we had never played before. As a team we took a little bit of time to get warmed up, but we still put in some good tackles and worked hard to defend against this very organised team.
Next up was Spratton Hall, a large school and big squad. This was a tough game and we struggled to gain ground and break their line.
Going into our third game against King’s College after a motivational team talk we were determined to get a win under our belts. We worked better as a team moving the ball forwards and finally reaching the tryline with a try by Beau, a further try came later in the game when Edward found space to score on the wing. We were delighted to come away with a 2 nil win.
With a change of pitch we went into our fourth game against Laxton School, despite it being closely contested Laxton won the game 2 nil.
In the next game we faced St Faith’s, a school from Cambridge - this was a very physical match. There were some great tackles from Rory who had to come off because of a bad split lip from a St Faith’s shoulder. Unfortunately this was the end for him.
We went into our last fixture a man down but St John’s kindly agreed to play eight-a-side. We were determined to get the win for Rory. Every player put in 100% which led to a well deserved victory.
Thank you to Mr Short and Mrs Felton and a very big thanks to Mr Ollard who was our one and only cheerleader who supported us from start to finish.
