We travelled to Cambridge Rugby Club for the U13 IAPS Festival hosted by King's College. We arrived in plenty of time and had a good warm up, which was needed as it was a cold afternoon. St Hugh’s were drawn in pool B which consisted of Caldicott Prep School, Winchester House School, Felsted Prep School and Cheltenham College Prep School. Unfortunately one team that was due to be in our pool pulled out, so we were short of one fixture.
St Hugh’s boys started the event with two really difficult games against some big prep schools. Cheltenham College and Caldicott Prep were both well drilled teams and any mistake St Hugh’s boys made was converted into points for the opposition. The boys learnt some tough lessons, but there were glimmers of how good they can play. Following a short break the boys took to the field against Winchester House. The game was a bit better matched for us, but St Hugh’s got drawn into breakdowns creating space out wide which Winchester found and scored some good tries. Our final pool game was against Felsted. St Hugh’s, despite the challenging fixtures, did not let their heads drop and improved game on game. Felsted was no exception, the boys started strongly and defended well and also had some strong carries with ball in hand. Felsted did have more of the ball and eventually converted that into some points.
Finishing 5th in our pool we had the opportunity to play 5th and 6th in pool A. First up St Hugh’s played 6th (Old Buckenham Hall) and the boys really showed how they could play. They finished the game winning with 3 tries to 1, 2 tries for Rupert and 1 for Toby. This boosted their confidence and St Hugh’s were straight back into action against 5th place finishers (Heath Mount). This was a well matched game, but St Hugh’s discipline did slip on occasions so the free kicks put a stop to the boys flow. We finished the game 1 try a piece. The try we scored however was a special one. Cross field kick from Max to Will C who slide across the line for a lovely try. Great finish to the afternoon, well done to all the boys involved.
