Report

We started a little tentatively against Grantham B and though we scored freely we did not make our presence felt defensively and allowed them through rather easily on occasion. However, we passed sharply and came out on top. Our passing remained top notch throughout our four games which was very pleasing as we had been working hard on improving in this area during the last few weeks. The Grantham coaches commented on how this aspect of our game had improved since we had played them last time. We held our own against our Under 9 team, now defending and attacking with equal conviction and we carried this on through to our penultimate match against Grantham A. This was our best performance of the day. Our passing and general handling was crisp, Wilf supported play superbly and Jenson and Aydin dominated attacks. It was good to see Arthur pitch in with a try and some excellent tagging. Euan and Cameron too played fine, understated but important roles in a match which we narrowly edged. The final match against Highfields saw us pitched against a strong Under 9 team. We continued to battle throughout this game though we were physically at quite a disadvantage. We finished the day tired but very satisfied by our all-round performances, particularly our passing. Well done boys!

Report

The U9 squad hosted 3 schools on Wednesday in their fun Hockey Festival. The St Hugh's girls were split into two mixed ability teams ready to show off their improving teamwork skills.

Team 1 kicked off the afternoon with their game against St George's. Realising early on that the opposition were inexperienced, the home team endeavoured to keep possession and play the ball around the pitch, involving each member of the team. Some fantastic leading runs from Ailsa on the wing enabled the home team to press the St George's defence. Getting a goal early into the match, St Hugh's made the most of their skill, moving the ball up and down the wings, giving the opposition a run around. Final score, 1-0 win for St Hugh’s.

The next match was against the other St Hugh's team where the opposition dominated the pitch. Lucy worked her socks off in the middle, tackling attackers and driving the ball up the pitch. Both teams had many chances at goal, but Team 2 saw more success in the D ending the game 2-0 to St Hugh’s 2.

Against Highfields At Hugh's 1 saw a very evenly matched game. The home team had to up their defensive play to prevent the opposition invading their attacking D. Some fantastic clearances from Scarlett and Verity ensured St Hugh's weren't put under too much pressure. Poppy made some great runs down the wing with Florence receiving the ball upfront to shoot at goal. St Hugh's worked hard to win this game as a team, with the result being a 2-0 win for St Hugh’s.

The final game for Team 1 was against Grantham. Wanting to clinch an early goal, Ailsa sent the ball hard to Poppy on the wing, who drove quickly towards the D. The Grantham defence were strong and kept the early goal at bay. Reacting quickly, the St Hugh's defenders protected the D, releasing the ball out to the wings. Some really inspiring teamwork from both schools and ending in a 0-0 draw.

A great afternoon of hockey very much enjoyed by all the players, umpires and spectators.

Join us next Wednesday for our U9 Hockey Set Matches.
