The U11 Boys' A hockey team travelled to Wisbech on Wednesday 31st January. William H was in goal with defenders of Jamie S and Toby A. Charlie H was on the left, Henry B on the right with Louis C and George P working the centre of the pitch.
For the 1st 5 minutes the boys were playing reaction hockey; reacting to the attacks that Wisbech were making and controlling the game. This resulted in them scoring with a big hit from the right that crept between William H and the post. Following this the boys started to control the game more with Louis bringing Charlie and George into the game. The first 15 minute third was won by Wisbch 1-0, but with us controlling more of the game.
In the second third the game was very even. Henry was coming into the game by making runs and creating more space between himself and George. Louis was working hard forward and backwards linking play from defence to attack. Toby and Jamie were marking better and timing their tackles. The third ended 0-0.
Moving into the last third we are feeling quite confident and were pushing forward for an equaliser. Charlie was now moving the ball well and making good passes. However it was Wisbech who moved further ahead following a couple of defensive lapses of not closing down and applying pressure. This allowed the Wisbech player with the big hit time to get his shot off and they added 3 more goals. Final score was 4-0 but it did not reflect the balance of play in the game. Moving forward St. Hugh's players need to work on pushing their shots into goal rather than trying big hits which are either scuffed or allow the defenders time to nip in and take the ball.
We travelled away to a chilly Wisbech and enjoyed an evenly matched couple of games in rotation.
The B team dominated proceedings and much of the play saw us camped inside the Wisbech half. Eddie E looked assured at the back and mopped up any attacks when required. We looked strong going forward with Freddie N, Morgan D, Will L and William B all attacking with great intent. Some good passing moves saw us create numerous chances but we found it tricky to convert any of them. The first half ended goalless. The second half continued in much the same vein and after pushing for a winner we finally found the net through Freddie N. Harry M in goal must have been chilled to the bone as he had little to do in the entire match. Well worked, boys!
The C team’s match was a little tighter and chances were few and far between for both teams. Joseph S played solidly at the back and made several crucial tackles. Likewise Jack B and Sam N got fully involved in the game and helped us to launch forays into the opposition half. Again the first half ended goalless. In the second half Wisbech applied more pressure and this time it was they who pinched a winner with a few minutes to spare; shooting into the corner just beyond the clutches of Henry L in goal.
Both games showed impressive hockey skills and great teamwork from the boys – well done!
