Match Reports

The cricket season got underway on Wednesday with a number of home and away matches taking place. The U11's travelled to Copthill and it was great to have forty pupils competing across four 10-a-side teams. All matches were played using the same format: five pairs softball.

U11A Team

Result: Won 331-258

On quite a small pitch we started our season in the field. The wicket was on a slight incline which made accurate bowling quite a tall order, but we all bowled with confidence and adjusted our style accordingly. Alert fielding, too, kept their runs to a minimum. Wickets were taken by: Will L (2), Jenson, Eli, Euan, and one run out.

We looked assured when batting and though the majority of our shots were hoisted to the short legside boundary, there were some real touches of class with a couple of well timed off drives, most notably by Euan B and Euan P. We were also careful not to give away wickets cheaply, with only three wickets lost in our innings. Run totals for each pair were:

  • Jenson & Aydin - 36
  • Max & Charles - 25
  • Sophie & Euan B - 16
  • Euan P & Will L - 28
  • Eli & Sophie - 26

A promising start to the season - well done!

U11B Team

Result: Won 308-286

The U11B team this week included Toby O, Rupert B-W, Fergus V, Charlie T, Wilf, Angelina, Megan D, Florence and Charlotte.

St Hugh's took to the field first with Toby opening the bowling for the St Hugh's side. Though the team was quiet to start, they began to communicate as the innings progressed. We worked hard in the field to limit runs and it was great to see us take five wickets across the innings. There were some superb catches made by Charlie (3), Wilf and Fergus. It was great to see every member of the team bowling a minimum of one over and even better to have a maiden over! Megan D, Angelina and Charlie particularly impressed with good length and accuracy!

Going into the second innings, St Hugh's were eager to exceed Copthill's score of 286. There was some superb batting on display with a good number reaching the boundary, scoring crucial points for the team. Rupert and Wilf made great contact on several occasions scoring several sixes. However, Copthill fielded well and took advantage of some high balls from the St Hugh’s batters to take a total of eight wickets, reducing the scoreline for our fourth and fifth pair.

  • Pair 1 - Angelina & Wilf - 40 runs
  • Pair 2 - Toby & Isadora - 21 runs
  • Pair 3 - Rupert & Florence - 35 runs
  • Pair 4 - Charlie & Megan - 7 runs (3 wickets)
  • Pair 5 - Fergus & Charlotte - 5 runs (2 wickets)

It was also pleasing to see a number of the players communicating and making good decisions which led to a number of single runs being scored. A pleasing first performance and a confident win for St Hugh’s.

U11C Team

Result: Won 374-325

First match of the season saw a very confident and consistent team effort. Everyone contributed to the final score with good communication in their pairs when batting and several players finding the boundary, scoring well.

In bowling, we saw some accurate bowls taking three wickets between the team and one caught out. Fielders worked well collectively backing each other up and reacting well to the game, managing to stump two players out.

Mahreen was awarded Player of the Match by the opposition. A great start to the season!

U11D Team

Result: Won 315-234

St Hugh’s fielded first and bowled well. Kitty, Raul and Toby particularly impressed with their bowling, with very few wides. Raul also went on to take two wickets in his third over, showing real progress over the course of the match. It was great to see everybody in the team having a go at bowling and their practice in games sessions really paying off.

When it was St Hugh’s turn to bat, it was great to see such clear communication between pairs. Quick-thinking and some strong hitting meant many runs scored and all players contributing to the overall win.

  • Arthur & Raul: 31 runs
  • Scarlett & Kitty: 30 runs
  • Toby & Matthew: 20 runs
  • Alicia & Michelle: 20 runs
  • Megan & Annabelle: 14 runs

It was excellent too for the team to be praised by the Copthill coach for being so receptive to feedback and really working on improving their skills. Well done everyone!
