Match Reports

Under 11 A/B Team

Result: Loss - Ranby 171, St Hugh’s 90

It was our first hardball match for quite a while after several cancellations due to weather. Thankfully we avoided the rain clouds and fitted in a whole match today. Playing as a mixed A/B team against a strong Ranby side made up of all Y6 children was always going to be a tall order. However, we fielded first and bowled with confidence and accuracy. Fielding too was sharp - William C collected a run out in the first over with an accurate shy at the stumps and Rupert was very alert in the third over to run out another batter. AJ’s consistent line and length bowling was rewarded with a wicket as William C bagged a well taken catch at mid-on. Euan B collected two wickets as well after bowling out batters with straight deliveries. Even with their stronger batters coming in at the end to try to increase the run rate with some big hits, both AJ and Wilf stepped up to the mark with some beautiful bowling to restrict them to singles. Toby O did a super job wicket keeping for the first time. Charles captained the team with assurance and both he and Charlie T sent down some testing deliveries. With a gettable target of 171 we were hopeful that we could overhaul their score. Unfortunately we collapsed somewhat in the batting. It started with a first ball of the innings wicket with a ball dollied up to mid-on. This somewhat set the tone for the innings and a combination of ill-judged runs and rather wayward strokes to straight deliveries led to several wickets falling in rapid succession. There were moments of good stroke play, notably from William C, Fergus, William S and Euan B but not frequent enough to protect the stumps adequately. Rupert and Fergus were the only pair not to get out; Rupert backed up cannily and put pressure on the fielders, judging well when to run. A good bowling and fielding performance today; back to the drawing board with the batting though!

U11 C Team

Result: Loss 312 Ranby, St Hugh's 261

The U11 C team faced a very strong and experienced Ranby B team on Wednesday in an excellent affair with both sides playing some great cricket throughout the match. The match started with St Hugh’s opening the batting. The first pair of Mahreen and Scarlett faced some very strong bowlers however were able to play strong shots and score 14 runs without taking a wicket which was very impressive. The second pair of Arthur and Raul faced a very difficult bowler who managed to get two wickets within his over. However, the pair of boys managed to score runs in their 2nd and 3rd over to add runs to our score. Michelle and Grace then came into bat as our third pair and played some of the most impressive shots of the day scoring and with some great communication were able to score runs by running through between the wickets. The 4th pair was Ted and Matthew who had another impressive few overs adding runs to our score. However, two run outs did not help increase our score. The final pair of Millie and Jemima had a tricky 3 overs struggling to add runs to our total due to some good bowling. It then became St Hugh's turn to bowl. Ranby were able to continue their strong start to the match by following up with more impressive batting to match their strong fielding performance. Mahreen and Scarlett opened the bowling in strong fashion not giving away many runs, however the talented batsmen were still able to find runs. However, one wicket from Mahreen helped peg Ranby back. The second pair of Arthur and Raul continued our string start to our fielding with Ted tacking a catch off of an Arthur bowl. Michelle and Grace then delivered a strong 3 overs losing the least amount of runs to the Ranby batsmen. Ted and Matthew bowled well, with Ted taking a wicket from a great bowl which hit the stumps. The final pair of Millie and Jemima were able to take two wickets with one being on the last ball of the game. In the end a talented Ranby team were able to score an impressive score of 312 compared to the still impressive 261 which St Hugh’s were able to score. Well done to all the children for a great afternoon and playing some brilliant cricket.
