Match Reports

B Team

Result: 7-20 L

The B & C team travelled to Wisbech this week to compete in their first 7 a side netball fixture. With the addition of WA and WD, the girls prepared for this in training and adapted quickly to the new format. The B match saw eight Year 5 and 6 girls play four quarters of ten minutes. Rotations are not necessary in the 7 a side game so while some players experienced more than one position, others had the chance to become more familiar with their specific role on court. The team were a little hesitant initially and allowed Wisbech to dominate. However, we did begin to work better as a team and focus on maintaining possession through the use of safe passes. St Hugh’s worked hard to transition the ball up court to our attacking circle and with some great shooting from Grace and Ailsa, we were pleased to score two goals in the first quarter. The second quarter saw us put under a fair bit of pressure from the Wisbech side and with some fantastic shooting Wisbech continued their lead. The third quarter was definitely our strongest with the girls really working hard for one another and creating space. This made for a very competitive ten minutes with our shooters adding to the scoresheet again and narrowly losing the quarter 3-2.  Defensively, we learned a lot from this game and having worked on Stage 1,2 and 3 defense in training, it was encouraging to see some of the girls applying this to their game. Megan, Michelle and Scarlett became more adept at marking their players tightly. In the centre court, Millie, Poppy and Peyton showed good movement off the ball in attack and made some super interceptions too! Well done.

C Team

Result: 8-4 W

The C team were able to play two Wisbech teams, with the opposition switching teams at half time. That, and quite a bit of rotation of positions, meant that all of the St Hugh’s girls got plenty of time on the court.

St Hugh’s got off to a great start and worked well as a team from the outset. Plenty of communication meant that the ball was accurately passed and all members of the team were much better at finding space on court. Kitty and Megan B demonstrated particularly good last-minute dodges to free themselves up. The second quarter continued in a similar fashion, and the girls continued marking closely and intercepting plenty of passes. St Hugh’s were 6-0 up at half-time, after some excellent shooting from Ela (2), Kitty (1), Megan B (1) and Annabelle (2).

In the third quarter, another rotation of positions saw Amelie scoring two goals, well-supported by Lucia. By the final quarter, it was evident that St Hugh’s were tiring a little more quickly than this second Wisbech side (having played for all three of the previous quarters!), and this final quarter really put our defence to the test. Henrietta made some solid interceptions as GK and Alicia and Olivia provided good support in the centre third, often able to put themselves into space. Though this quarter finished with Wisbech having scored four goals, the girls finished the game rightly proud of their 8-4 win and having all worked really hard. Great work!
