Match Report
Result: Witham 151-3 , St Hugh’s 92 all out
A good challenging game today against a Witham team that had strength in depth. They batted first and despite Euan P’s excellent direct hit run out of their useful No. 2 batter early on, they rattled the scoreboard on at a pace. A brotherly combination in the field of Euan and Rory P saw another run out, but only after Witham had two batters retire after reaching 30 runs. Euan bagged one wicket late on in the innings, but Witham amassed a large total of 151-3.
Rory S and Euan opened assuredly; obdurate in defence, and playing shots with a flourish in attack. Unfortunately, Rory fell foul of some sharp fielding when his lofted drive to mid-off was well caught. The standard of the Witham bowling was good throughout their line-up, and it was tricky to pick off many poor deliveries. Sam H provided quality moments with some smart off-drives to the boundary and he partnered Euan well until he was bowled after an impressive 11 runs. Euan later succumbed with a hard-earned 16 runs scored. Overall, we never managed to get ourselves into a rhythm in our partnerships and many batters were again bowled - a combination of accurate bowling, playing across the line to straight balls and a lack of patience all being contributory factors. The team stuck at their task well today and it was good to see everybody involved, including Rory P (Year 4) who bowled very well in his first hardball match for the U11s.
