The whole Year 5 and 6 cohort travelled to Lincoln on Wednesday to play in graded matches against Lincoln Minster School. For the ‘A’ team this was a great opportunity to play together prior to competing in Friday’s IAPS Qualifier.
It was super to have everyone involved this week, especially having had a number of girls unavailable due to isolation over the previous few weeks. It was a long awaited event and the girls were clearly excited about the prospect of playing in competitive inter-school matches again.
Our ‘B’ team was made up of predominantly Year 6 girls having had a little more experience. While we got off to a slow start, our final third saw a very different game and the team worked extremely well together using the width and depth of the pitch well. Initially, we were a little tentative off the ball but as time progressed the players grew in confidence when closing the opposition down and denying them space and time on the ball. There is further work to be done on our tackling skills and getting stuck in but I am sure with further practice, this will come. The goal came from a strong shot from Ailsa, having had some lovely play down the wing. Isadora played particularly well, showing great pace on the ball. There was also some good defensive work from Poppy, Megan D and Peyton where they pushed up to support their midfielders and offer a turn out in order to switch play. Scarlett enjoyed her time in goal having had the opportunity to try this new position out in games time.
The ‘C’ team was made up of predominantly Year 5 girls and for a few of them, this was their first match of the term. This team bonded early on in the game, working well together to transition the ball into our attacking half. There was some fantastic play by Kitty W, who carried the ball extremely well but distributed it even better! The girls had a number of chances in the first half but were unlucky not to convert these. However, with some positional changes and following a constructive team talk, Kitty went on to score three out of four goals with Megan B scoring our fourth. This was a well executed goal, which started right from our defence with Annabel J sending a super pass out wide, through our midfield players and into our attacking circle. At times, we were a little hesitant of the ball so again this is an area to develop in the second half of term. A very pleasing performance.
Well done to all players for representing St Hugh’s so well.
