Report
U13A
On Wednesday 17th January the U13 A boy’s hockey team travelled to Oakham to take on their U12s.
On a bitterly cold day, with a bracing wind, the boys were fast out of the stalls as Henry H score within the 1st minute with a run from the midfield as the Oakham defence hesitated. The game then became more even with solid defending from Albert A in goal and Horatio E and Jake D in defence. It was on 10 minutes that Nathan H scored St. Hugh’s second and this quickly brought the third from Henry a minute later. It was in the 19th minute of the 20 played in the half that Oakham scored and within a minute they had got their second. Half time was 3-2.
In the second half Oakham scored first to equalise following some poor defending on a short corner. However, Nathan re-established a lead two minutes later. On 8 minutes we secured a short corner and this was converted by a Henry with a fine strike making the score 5-3 with 12 minutes to go. William H and Isaac T were working hard on the wings in both defence and attack. On 14 minute Oakham scored their final goal of the game giving St. Hugh’s a winning start to the season.
U13B
With the exception of Lorenzo in goal, this was the first ever hockey match for all the B team players. After only four training sessions it was always going to be quite a challenge to compete in this first match, and so it proved. Ockham’s forward players were very skilful and we were under constant pressure from the beginning, however Jack C, Jake W and Digby worked really hard in defence to make life as difficult as possible for Oakham. Lorenzo was very busy in goal and made some superb saves, coming off his line at any opportunity. We restricted them to 4 goals in the first half. IN the second half we showed some pleasing improvement and won two penalty corners through some good stick work from Jack and Harry S. I was delighted with the effort from the players on a very cold, windy afternoon and can see potential for the rest of the season.
