Match Report

Result: Winners of the IAPS Plate Competition

Thursday 14th of October saw the U13 girls travel to Repton to compete in the regional IAPS competition.  As it was a 7am departure, the girls stayed the night in the boarding house following a team building meal at Zucci's.

We arrived at 9am ready for a 10am first game against Sedburgh. This was a great game. Sedburgh took the lead after four minutes but two minutes later Penny equalised. Two minutes after the break Beth scored, however, Sedburgh equalised and the final score was 2-2.

Our second game was against the host school which is renowned for their hockey.  However, at the end of the first half it was only 1-0 to Repton and we were still in with a shout. With three goals in two minutes in the second half Repton showed their dominance… however, Penny had other thoughts and running from her own half through three players she scored a fantastic solo goal.  The final score was 4-1.

Our 3rd game was against Belhaven Hill from Scotland. In the first half, Beth scored after 5 minutes assisted by Penny. It was 1-0 at half time. In the second half, it was a close game with Ruby making some fine saves but Peyia was there to flick the ball into the net to give us a winning 2-0 margin.

We finished 3rd in our group which put us into the afternoon Plate Competition.

As Witham Hall had not travelled to the competition, we had a bye in the quarter finals which would be to our advantage as we would only need to play hard for two games. It also allowed us to watch our next competitor The Elms. We didn't see much to fear from them and three minutes into our game Beth slotted home. The game was still in the balance but Freya and Hatty were working hard in defence with Penny. Annabel, Imogen and Peyia were working hard up and down the wings. It was Peyia who scored after two minutes of the second half and this put us through to the final against Spratton Hall.

In the final, we started scrappily and they kept breaking through our defence into the D but they either shot wide or Ruby was up to their shot. Beth scored the first goal and then got hit by the ball on the neck. She recomposed herself for the second half and got a second. The final goal was created by Beth but Annabel made sure by turning it in on the back post.

After five games, ten goals for, six against and three clean sheets we were proud to secure the Plate Competition. Our performance against much bigger schools again showed the quality of hockey and determination of the girls at St Hugh's.
