U13 Hockey
We had the long journey to Bedford to take part in the IAPS hockey regional competition. We were in a group of four teams, which turned out to be an extremely strong group as it included Bishop Stortford, the eventual winners, Wellesley Prep the third placed team as well as the plate winners Beachborough and ourselves. Our three group games were all challenging, but it was clear to see a steady improvement with each game with more positive passing, greater movement off the ball and some good tackling. Toby in goal made some great saves too.
We finished fourth in the group and went through to the plate competition where we met Ashfold. This was a much tighter game, however we conceded a goal to a penalty stroke. We then equalised after Rupert and Fergus combined to set up Max to score. With the scores level we went into extra time and then penalty flicks. Toby saved the first two attempts and with Euan and Max scoring theirs we went through to the semi final. This was another close game with Will L scoring early to give us the lead. Great to see him back in action following injury! Some good defending from Will C, Charles and Max meant we hung on to win and get into the final. We met Beachborough again and had chances to take the lead in the first half through Rupert, Will, Charlie and Euan that finished 0-0 at half time. Unfortunately we conceded in the second half and had to push forward to try to find an equaliser which allowed Beachborough to score twice more. It was much closer than the 3-0 final score suggests but a great effort to come runners up in the plate competition! Great effort from the St Hugh’s team amongst some far larger schools.
