With one player short this week we arrived at Ranby for a triangular set of fixtures with just four players. We mixed up the teams against Ranby with two of our players on one side and two on the other. After a brief period of acclimatising to this unusual set of circumstances, the St Hugh’s boys played dominant roles in their respective teams. Jackson and Elliot in particular did well to try to involve their Ranby teammates in the few passing moves on a crowded pitch.

For the match against St. Anselm’s we stuck together as a four with two additional Anselm’s players to make up our team of six. More comfortable with this arrangement, we proceeded to score several tries through mazy runs by Elliot and Archer. Dan proved elusive in the runs he made in very tight spaces down the line and Jackson provided excellent support play at the right time by the try line. The boys played with confidence and assurance today – well done!

On Wednesday we took part in a mini festival at Ranby house. The boys played against St. Anselm’s and Ranby and it was an absolute joy to watch and it was amazing to see the amount of parents supporting the boys from the side lines despite the long journey. All of the boys played with admirable enthusiasm, though not winning the games the amount of improvement the boys displayed in their attacking game was incredible to see. It’s hard to pick out a couple of boys to commend for their efforts and improvement, so Freddie H for running straight and using his feet to beat players; Daniel S for using his pace to speed around the defence as the last man and managing to bag himself two tries in the corners; Henry E for being a one man maul and working his arms free to make crucial offloads; Harry H for his incredible tenacity and determination to bring players down in the tackle and using his pace to get through small gaps in defences; Cole V for getting stuck in and running into anyone on the pitch regardless of their size; Harrison S for saving a good number of tries with his awesome tackling and also scoring a few with his interesting but effective lines of running and last but not least Tom B for getting increasingly better and braver through the whole season and having two outstanding games in this festival. It’s been an absolute pleasure to coach these boys and watch them grow as rugby players. The future is bright for these young chaps if they choose to continue with their rugby.

We played against three other schools at the Ranby rugby festival on Wednesday 22nd November.  The first match was against Ranby, a strong team we had played in our first match in September. We made the mistake in the first half of trying to run through the opposition defence. This didn’t work and Ranby took a 4-0 lead. A change in tactics at half time meant we passed the ball much better and it was probably the best half of rugby we have played all season. Although we lost the match we won the second half 2-1.

The second game was against St Anselm’s, whose defence was not as strong as Ranby’s.  William B took advantage of this and scored four tries – he was far too fast for the opposition. We won the game 7-2.

The final game was against Westbourne School from Sheffield.  It was an tightly fought game where with a bit more luck we would have been ahead at half time....instead we were 2-0 down.! Another excellent display and a superb try from Harry M brought the score back to 2-2. We had a chance to win the game but unfortunately Westbourne scored in the last seconds to make the final score 3-2. A great afternoon of rugby.

The festival at Ranby provided a great opportunity to test ourselves against opposition we don't normally have an opportunity to play with S. Anselm's and Westbourne making up the festival teams with Ranby.  Our first fixture against Ranby was a very tough match and we let Ranby get on top from the first whistle.  The final score of 3-1 was a fair reflection of the match with a solo try from Charlie H; Ranby deserved their victory on this occasion.  Our second fixture against S. Anselm's proved to be very different from our first match and we played with a great deal more flair and organisation.Congratulations to Matthew L for scoring two tries during this match with Charlie H adding the other. Our final match against Westbourne proved to be a tale of two halves.  We seemed to lose our rhythm from the previous match and ended the first half four tries down.  However, the second half was a very different scenario and and some excellent inter-play ensured we scored three unanswered tries to eventually lose by 4 tries to three.  Tries from Charlie H (2), amassing four tries in the afternoon, and William H rounded off a good afternoon for the boys.
