Match Report U9A v Wellow House:

Result: St Hugh's 300, Wellow House 225

What a superb day on which to end the cricket season - full sunshine, a home fixture and spectators for the first time in over a year!

Wellow decided to bat first and from the off we were bowling with more accuracy and intent than the previous week. Our fielding, as has been all term, was sharp and catches were taken confidently. We managed to keep them restricted to 225 after 12 overs due to a combination of tight bowling and regular wicket-taking. Having worked hard on our calling and backing-up during the week’s Games sessions, it was very pleasing to see that communication was so good between the pairs of batters. We pressured the fielders with our quick singles and took our opportunities to hit boundaries with the loose deliveries, with several players getting sixes. What was probably most pleasing was the more cultured stroke-play which punctuated the innings and showed a real maturity and game sense. We finished up on 300 after 12 overs.

This team has been a delight to teach - they have been really receptive to advice and it has been fantastic to see the improvements they have made over the course of the term. I am sure that they will continue to flourish in their sporting exploits as they move up the school with such a positive and constructive attitude to sport.

Match Report U9B v Wellow House:

Result: St Hugh's 317, Wellow House 227

It was a gorgeous sunny afternoon on the Astro for the match against Wellow and lovely to see so many parents spectating, many for the first time.

The U9B team started the match with the impressive batting pair of Charlie and Fergus. Between them, they scored 44 runs in 3 overs, with both boys getting us off to a good start with some excellent 4s. Kitty and Alicia were up to bat next, scoring a further 10 runs and communicating well with each other. Mille and George were another strong batting pair, scoring 32 runs in 3 overs. Finally, Sam and Keegan stepped up to bat, both Year 3 boys really holding their own amongst the Year 4 players on the team. They scored a further 31 runs, including some impressive 4s, taking our total to 317 after 12 overs, a fantastic effort from the whole team.

In the field, strong bowling from several members of the team meant very few wides and two wickets taken. The team worked well together, getting the ball quickly back to the bowler and communicating well with one another. It was great to see how much improvement they have made over the term, and they finished the game having restricted Wellow to 227, a decisive win for the St Hugh’s team. Well done all!
