Report

It was a super afternoon of hockey for the U9 girls on Monday with fixtures against Lincoln Minster School. The girls were excited about another home match on our all weather pitch and it was great to see every girl represent St Hugh's!

The U9A team won the toss taking the first centre pass. A firm ball from Peyton upfront found Amelia in the middle who immediately headed for goal. Minster's solid defending kept any attempts on goal at bay, pressing the home team hard. The away team took the lead during the first quarter, making the St Hugh's girls work hard in defense. Returning to the pitch after half time saw the home team step up their play, gaining more attacking opportunities. Ailsa received a hard ball from Peyia in defense, driving the wing and releasing to Peyton upfront who passed to Amelia who slipped the ball into the goal. Continued effort from Florence and Poppy at the back saw the ball move from end to end quickly. Play was consistently good, with players using the space efficiently and playing the ball around the opposition. Finding Olivia on the wing, the ball was moved swiftly up the pitch feeding the ball to the forwards. A hard ball into the D from Lucy worked its way from player to player before finally slipping into the bottom right hand corner of the goal.

A brilliant effort from all the U9A players saw a hard fought 3-2 loss. Great determination from the St Hugh's in a very evenly matched, competitive game.

The U9B team started off a little quiet and reserved but it did not take them long to get into their stride.  Initially we stood back and allowed LMS time on the ball but as time went on, the St Hugh's girls began to show more confidence and I was pleased to see them create attacking opportunities.  We took the lead quite early on but LMS fought back and equalised shortly after. The girls listened to feedback well and tried hard to string together passes and keep their heads up to ensure good vision on the pitch. Mhareen and Scarlett worked particularly well at the back and by the end of the match they had learnt that defenders can also attack!  Verity had a much improved second half and played a key role in the centre.  More goals came from St Hugh's in the second half and we also managed to deny LMS time on space. A well deserved 5-1 win!  Well done to all players for your contribution.

We look forward to welcoming Grantham Prep on Wednesday.
