An U9A team travelled to Witham Hall on Wednesday to compete in their Annual U9 Tournament. Our team was made up of both Year 3 & 4 girls and was, for some, their first experience of competitive netball. Olivia captained the team and led a thorough warm up on arrival. She also made some wise decisions when winning the toss in order to avoid shooting into the low sun.
Our first game was tough, against Bedford Modern, who informed us that they had over thirty girls in Year 4! Despite this, St Hugh's worked incredibly hard to deny them space and although we lost this game, we learnt a lot. The highlight of the afternoon was our match against Leicester Grammar B team which we went on to win. There was super court linkage and the team really began to work well off the ball. With some great work in our attacking half, there were several good balls fed in to our shooters from the circle edge. Verity and Sophie worked hard for one and other and it was great to see them having lots of shots on target (Verity 4, Sophie 1).
Our closest game was against Copthill and both teams displayed great determination to win possession. This did at times lead to us being pulled up for contact but the girls took this on board and began to check their distance when marking the ball. It was not until the final minute when Copthill received an overhead pass into the circle, and the GA stepped up to score. Although we lost this game narrowly, it was a good team performance.
In our final game we did struggle against a very tall Year 4 Witham side who were well drilled. St Hugh's lost their form and found it hard to keep up with the pace of the game. I was very impressed, however, with their efforts and they showed great resilience following a heavy defeat. We left Witham knowing we had competed well, particularly considering we are a very young team. Well done to all players. and thank you to those parents who braved the harsh conditions!
