The U9 girls are certainly getting a lot of match play, with two matches scheduled per week for three weeks in a row! We welcomed two teams from Lincoln Minster School on Monday afternoon to play against our U9A&B team. The game was divided into four ten minute quarters which gave each player forty minutes of hockey. Playing in quarters proved to be quite popular amongst the players and they certainly deserved the two minute break!
The U9A game was a very well matched fixture with both teams defending well and creating attacking opportunities on the turnover. As the game progressed, so did the players and there was some super movement both on and off the ball. It was 2-2 at half time and each individual player set themselves a target for the second half of the game following our team talk. The second half was very tense, with both teams determined to take the victory. I was really impressed by how quickly our girls began to react to the umpire, taking quick self passes and running back on side following each goal. There were a further six goals scored before the final whistle and the game could have gone either way. St Hugh's worked hard in the middle of the pitch and played some good balls into our attacking circle but at times we held on to the ball too long and LMS were quick to close us down. Despite losing this game 6-4, the team finished on a real high knowing they had played very well together as team.
The U9 B team got off to a fantastic start on Monday afternoon. Their commitment in training sessions had clearly paid off as they were demonstrating some excellent play, getting into space and passing out wide to their wingers. It was great to see the girls come together as a team - talking to one another and using each member of the team effectively. This enabled the team to score an impressive 5 goals by half time! A little half-time team talk and the girls were in very high spirits and eager to get back onto the pitch. With a little shuffling of positions, giving the defence an opportunity to play up front and our centres the opportunity to practise their defence, the girls were quick to get back into a flowing game with very few calls for misplay in the second half. Another successful half saw the team scoring a further 3 goals! As the full time whistle blew the team were delighted with their win and their pink faces were a true example of the fantastic efforts put in by each player from both teams.
