Report

It was a close encounter on Wednesday afternoon against a solid Ranby side. With a couple of players absent we made some changes to our starting line up for the A team this week.  Florence captained the team this week and took on this role with great maturity.

The first quarter saw both sides battle hard with goal scoring opportunities at either end of the court. However, neither team managed to capitalise and this quarter finished as a scoreless draw.

In the second and third quarter Ranby came back stronger, with a couple of their players dominating play.  St Hugh's conceded a goal eventually and Ranby went on to score a further goal in the third quarter.  We worked extremely hard in defence and the girls really did put in a lot of effort in what turned out to be a very warm day!

As the game progressed, the team began to realise the importance of marking their own player and this slowed the Ranby side down in the final quarter. We made some super interceptions in our defensive half, and there was great court linkage, particularly in the final quarter which we went on to draw.

The girls are really beginning to gel as a team and this week demonstrated a very good awareness of the rules and basic tactical play.  Final score 0-2 defeat.  Well done to all players for their fantastic work rate on court and determination to keep working hard to the final whistle!  Player of the match goes to Florence L as GK and Amelia F as GD (2nd half).

The B team also really held their own against a tough Ranby side. Phoebe had her first experience of Captain and had some useful suggestions for the team following the first quarter.

The girls got off to an excellent start. Accurate passing from the whole team and skilled shooting from Ailsa resulted in the team being 1-0 up in the first few minutes. Ranby game back with a goal of their own in the first quarter, tying up the game, and the girls went into the second quarter determined.

Ranby came back strong in the second and third quarter, with the majority of play being in their goal third. The defenders in the D worked hard, but the girls struggled to move the ball back into the centre third. The final quarter opened with Ranby leading 4-1.

The final quarter was the girls' best and it was great to see them working together and remaining in high spirits. There was some excellent communication between players and the team are really beginning to find the space on court. We now need to work on passing to the players in the space rather than going over heads!

Having not conceded a goal in the final quarter, the game finished in a 1-4 defeat. The whole team worked very hard and coped well with swapping positions. Well done to Grace, Lucia, Scarlett and Henrietta who stepped in to play WA for Ranby so we could keep a full 7-a-side game going. Player of the match goes to Isadora for some fantastic work as GD and for keeping playing despite injury, and to Amelie for her tireless effort - those legs never stopped moving! Well done girls.
