Uppingham Prep School’s Orchestra Day

Our musicians were delighted to be invited to Uppingham’s annual Prep School’s Orchestra Day, which took place on Thursday 6th February. Instrumentalists from the orchestra participated in the event, along with 14 other prep schools’ musicians. In total, some 200 pupils attended the day of fabulous music making.
The theme for the day was ‘Over The Rainbow’, featuring pieces containing colours in their title. The strings performed “Purple Haze” by Jimi Hendrix, and completely rocked during the concert! The Wind and Brass players took on Gershwin’s “Rhapsody In Blue” - a piece which challenges professional musicians, let alone 10-13 year olds! A choir was also formed, performing “Blue Moon”, providing a beautiful contrast to the instrumental music. The full orchestra finished the concert with “The Pink Panther” and “Over The Rainbow”, creating an enormous, powerful (and subtle when necessary) sound.
Words cannot do justice to the sound which was created in the Concert. Pupils, as they always do, performed impeccably throughout the day and had a joyous time. They should each be incredibly proud of their efforts towards a spectacular finale! A huge thank you to Uppingham for being brilliant hosts and facilitators.
