Match Report
With the Brooke Priory grass pitches out of action, all the matches in the festival were played on the one Astroturf pitch with teams taking turns to play against other schools.
B Team
The Bs started in the first game and though we strung some decent passes together, we found it difficult to penetrate the opposition penalty area. In the second match the Bs played, we found ourselves against the same opposition. The performance this time was much improved and we created many more chances to score. Woodwork was hit (by Miles S) and the goalie’s hands were stung on occasion but unfortunately there were no goals to show for our efforts. However, this time we were much more resolute at the back and did not concede any goals.
A Team
The A team faced a strong Brooke Priory team in their first game and we matched them for effort and determination. However, Brooke carved out a clever opening goal and added to their tally a couple of times after that. There was some heroic last-ditch defending too, though, with players working hard to help out in defence. A combination of committed tackles along with the two goalposts kept down the number of goals conceded. The second A team game was against a skilful Peterborough side who, in their first match, had demolished Brooke Priory. We therefore started this game with some trepidation. Much to the spectators’ pleasure, St Hugh’s put up a fantastic fight and we held our own for long periods of the game. Several golden opportunities to score were created but unfortunately none were converted. Peterborough found the net on a few occasions but we could hold our heads up high after a battling performance. I was very proud of all the players as they stuck to their tasks, with Edward R enjoying standout performances in defence in both matches with his excellent positional play and well-timed tackles.
