Match Report

W LMS 255 SHS 260

Rather unusually for this sun-soaked season this fixture was close to being rained off. However, a short delay of ten minutes was enough for the blue skies to appear and the pitch to start to dry out. Rory P won the toss and elected to field first in a 6-pair, 18 overs game. Although Lincoln Minster did not pile on the runs, we found it hard to make a breakthrough on the wickets front. It was good to see Edward J pick up the first wicket with an accurate delivery, then George P joined in on the act with two wickets in three balls. A couple of run outs during Miles’s over and a fantastic caught and bowled by Seb, saw us keep their total down to 255.

After a quick tea, we were confident of overhauling this total. However, we too found it tricky to put runs on the board and we tended to lose careless wickets (as we had last week) to boot. Not a good combination for a run chase! We were scoring at roughly the same rate as Lincoln Minster, until Rory P and April S sped things up and added 25 runs without loss from their three overs. This put us on 249 - within six runs of their total for the last pair of Alastair O and Miles S to try to achieve. It was a bit of a bumpy ride, though - we had reached 259 and looking good when we tried a kamikaze second run, which led to the inevitable run out. This left us tied 255-255 with three balls left. Fortunately, a couple of extras, and a single saw us over the line and we ended up on the right side of a very close game.

I would like to thank all the players who represented the hardball team for a very enjoyable season. Pupils played with good grace, competitiveness and integrity throughout. I would also like to extend my thanks to the parents who supported loyally both home and away, and to Tom, our excellent groundsman who has prepared a wonderful wicket for every home match.
