Match Reports

A Team

Result: 15-5 Win

The U11A side enjoyed having the opportunity to play on home soil this week (and the luxury of the larger indoor court!). We faced an athletic group of girls from Witham Hall, playing six lots of six minutes. With just the minimal five players, the girls got ample court time playing in every position on court. Though some of them definitely have preferences in terms of positions, it is a great way to improve their understanding of the game and allows them to develop more as a player.

Lulu and Penelope captained the game together this week and it was great to see the team working well together both in attack and defence. Though we lost the toss, it did not take long for St Hugh’s to turn the ball over and transition the ball up court to Coco and Charlotte in the circle. However, everything was 100mph which led to a breakdown in communication and saw Witham score the first goal of the game. St Hugh’s fought hard to equalise and goals came eventually from both our shooters. It was a competitive start with Witham going into the first break 3-2 up.

From then on, St Hugh’s slowed their game down, demonstrating some good stable landings on receipt of the ball. We began to hold our players and time our drives more effectively.  As a result, we dominated possession and on the second rotation Tabitha and Penelope scored a further three goals. Charlotte, Coco and Lulu managed to hold off the Witham attack, making some good interceptions to win the ball back. Our third rotation saw Coco scoring once again and the Witham side being put under a lot of pressure. At half time, the girls were leading 6-3.

The second half continued in similar fashion with St Hugh’s dominating play. A great fourth rotation saw Penelope and Charlotte on fire in the goal circle - a 5-2 win in the six minutes. Defensively, we began to stick with our players better and it was great to see our stage two defence in action - particularly from Tabitha and Coco. We certainly denied the opposition space and time which prevented them from scoring for the remainder of the match. Tabitha and Lulu had a good number of shooting opportunities and I was delighted to see Lulu scoring in the final rotation, putting every player on the scoresheet! A confident win - well done girls! We look forward to facing Lincoln Minster at home after the half term break.

B Team

C Team

Result: 16-2 Loss

The C team went out in full force and played beautifully as a team, supporting one another and identifying areas where praise was required. True team spirit!

Witham was a tough opponent, but the girls refused to give up! We offered continual possibilities for ball handlers, providing more than two options for each ball.

The girls also kept the ball high and remained focused on their players. All parts of training from previous weeks were demonstrated throughout.

Genevieve was named player of the match for her outstanding interceptions and tight stage one marking, which made a challenge for the Witham attack to get a shot on goal.
