As we approached the final week of our cross country season, our penultimate race was Ayscoughfee Hall Invitational. This week we entered two teams into all categories, with the permission of the hosts. This added some extra excitement and it was great to have so many compete for the school in what turned out to be a very successful afternoon of racing for the St Hugh’s contingent.
There were some outstanding individual performances across all categories and there was a real sense of team spirit amongst the St Hugh’s competitors. It was great to see our strongest runners using each other to push themselves.
It was an epic performance this week by Vinnie B, who did his upmost to stick on teammate Beau’s shoulder. He put in a real shift as it is not an easy task to keep our U11 Captain in sight. He did this up until the final push where Beau shifted up a gear to ensure a confident win. An outstanding performance from this pair. Gio and Edward R also had a fantastic run this week, finishing in 3rd and 4th place respectively. It came as no surprise that the U11 Boys finished 1st Place with the best possible score of 10! Our ‘B’ scorers included Edward P (11th) who never fails to smile and wave and the crowd, George C (12th), Charles P (13th) and Harry (16th). This effort saw the boys achieve 4th palce overall.
The U11 Girls were not far behind, scoring an incredible 11 points from our top 4 finishers. Hollie F this week crossed the line 1st for St Hugh’s with an extremely confident run. She was very closely followed by teammate Harriet T, who has also had a super XC season. The girls have used each other well to push themselves and we were delighted to see Harriet achieve 2nd place. Our 3rd counter was Cecily T who is always such a grafter out in the XC course. Cecily dug deep and secured 3rd place, resulting in St Hugh’s receiving every medal position. She was followed closely this week by Bella I, who had a particularly strong run this week, finishing 5th overall. A superb performance by the U11A Girls in the largest field of runners. Our ‘B’ team achieved 3rd place overall with Charlotte coming in 8th place, Anna 9th, Bonnie 10th and Abi 12th. This superb performance saw them achieve 3rd place from a field of 7 teams.
Our U9 Girls and Boys also performed well this week and it was lovely to have two teams from both categories running. Our U9 Boys were delighted to achieve 2nd and 4th place respectively. Captain, George P, put out his usual outstanding effort and was unlucky not to hold his lead position as the finish line came into sight. Another podium position for Mr Pellant! Our other three ‘A’ team counters had a fantastic run coming in close proximity in 7th (Albie), 8th (Freddie) and 9th place (Zach). Our B team also finished in close proximity achieving 10th (Bertie), 12th (Monty), 13th (Raphael) and 14th (Joshua). Barnes followed shortly in 15th. A great team effort! Valentina led the U9 girls in her usual form and whilst having some initial competition she opened the gap quite significantly to get yet another 1st place position. It was super to see Y3 pupils, Tilly, as our second counter this week in 5th place. She was followed by Lucy (7th) and Ottilie 9th. This gave the ‘A’ team a pleasing 2nd place position. Just as impressive, our ‘B’ team finished in 3rd place, with our four runners achieving 10th (Georgia), 11th (Ophelia), 13th (Eme) and 14th (Alexandra).
Well done, TEAM ST HUGH’S! We look forward to our final race of the year at Stamford. Well done to everybody who has faced some brutally challenging courses over the season!
