U9 Rugby & U8 Hockey v Ranby (A) 2.00pm
Match Report
U9 Rugby
Our whole Y3&4 cohort travelled to Ranby on Monday afternoon to play in a series of rugby and hockey fixtures. Our U9’s formed two rugby teams, one contact and one touch. The progress these players have made already has been fantastic and with it being an away match, it was great to be able to stand back and watch them play together as a team.
The contact team worked hard for one another, showing good support for the ball carrier and became very efficient at getting the ball away following a tackle, a job Georgia seemed to take to very naturally! There were some moments of great attacking play, from Monty’s quick feet to Tilly’s unbeatable speed! Georgia showed great courage when taking the ball into contact, a force to be reckoned with! It was encouraging to see Toby and Monty beginning to gain more ground by going forwards in attack. Raphael put in a tremendous shift in defence, demonstrating his strength in the tackle. Reuben demonstrated some excellent offloads, distributing the ball effectively having drawn in the defence. There were several tries scored by the St Hugh’s side, with every team member contributing either via an assist or score. Overall a very pleasing performance. The players reflected on their performance at the end of each third and it was great to hear them sharing their thoughts and setting themselves goals. Well done, Team St Hugh’s!
The touch team played an entertaining game against their counterparts from Ranby. We took a while to get going but by the end of the first third Hugo had scored three tries, after scintillating runs, to keep us in contention at 3-4. As the game went on we started to lose our defensive shape and gaps began to appear for the opposition to exploit. However, we continued to add to our tally with several different try-scorers; Halle broke through after some great approach play from Hugo and Ophelia, and Ophelia herself forced her way to the try line in dominant fashion. The final score was 7-12 to Ranby. Plenty to work on with accuracy of passing and defensive formations but plenty of positives too - some great running with the ball and a super display of resilience and togetherness.

Result: 0-2 2-2
All of Year 3 travelled to Worksop to play Ranby in their first experience of an away game for St Hugh’s. The Year was split into two teams playing two 8 vs 8 games against Ranby. The two teams came up against some tough opposition from Ranby with their teams containing some experienced hockey players. Despite the tough opposition both St Hugh’s teams showed great determination and put in a strong effort.
On Pitch 1 St Hugh’s were involved in a close fought game with some great defence from Theo P and Dilly to limit the opposition to just 2 goals. Attacking Zachary and Ophelia came close with some great attacking breaks getting just in shooting range before being tackled.
On pitch 2 Leo showed some great attacking skills scoring St Hughs’ two goals of the day and Arthur H showed some great defensive skills up against some good attackers from Ranby. As the game continued the 8 vs 8 format meant more and more players were drawn towards the ball meaning Ranby were able to exploit the large pitches.
A special mention must go to Digby for his superb support and scoring.
Overall both St Hugh’s teams put in a great effort in their first away game for the school showing some progression from previous games and great resilience and togetherness.
