U11A v LMS A 3-1 W
A tough fixture this week against a physically strong and quick Lincoln Minster team. It proved to be a good challenge trying to cope with their strength on and off the ball. However, Lincoln Minster had to deal with our tough tackling and swift passing game too. We took the lead after some excellent approach play, ending with a super crossfield pass from Beau B-W into the box for a speeding Gio C to get on the end of, before their keeper, and divert the ball expertly into the net. Lincoln Minster responded quickly and after some slightly panicky defending in our box the ball broke for them and they scored a deserved equaliser. However, before the interval Edward R calmly dispossessed their rangy forward and we then passed it through the midfield neatly. George P slotted a beautifully weighted pass through to Beau in acres of space; he ran into their box unopposed and simply passed the ball into the net past their keeper with a finish Jimmy Greaves would have been proud of.
The second half was more nerve-racking as Lincoln Minster pushed forward in search of another equaliser. At times, we were defending for our lives and, with a little bit of luck and a lot of hard work, we successfully blocked their shots. Callan N in goal positioned himself well whenever shots did get through and was recognised by their players as our player of the match. With Lincoln Minster pushing so far forward, when we did get clear of them we created several overloads on their defence. Thankfully, George P snapped up a neat volley with his right foot - previously I had thought it was only used for standing on! - and scored to give us a more comfortable cushion. This team is showing great resilience and character throughout the side - those so far unmentioned here are: Seb F, a stalwart at the back, Alastair O working up and down tirelessly in midfield, and the pesky Rory P up front giving defenders no time to settle. Very well worked today boys!
U11B LMS B W 3-0 - Burton Hathow W 2-0 - LMS C 4-1 W
The B team played 3 matches of 12 minutes each.
The first was against Lincoln MInster B. We were a couple of players down due to absence and injury so Charlie and Ralph from year 4 were drafted in. We started well and moved the ball around the pitch nicely. Edward P was particularly effective in defence and cleared the ball whenever the opposition attacked. Miles, Joshua, Ralph and Paul had good shots on goal with Miles scoring one and Ralph 2 after George C played the ball through to him. The game finished 3-0.
We then played Burton Hathow, with Charlie taking over from Henry in goal. Henry opened the scoring with a deflected shot before Ralph added a second. There was some impressive inter play around the opposition penalty box meaning we could get more shots on target. The game finished 2-0.
The final game, against Lincoln Minster C saw Josh F score the goal of the afternoon, beating two players and chipping the ball over the goalkeeper into the top corner. It also saw a penalty save from Miles. St Hugh’s won the game 4-1. A very successful afternoon.
