Match Report
Result: Won by three runs: 233-230
A really exciting encounter ensued between St Hugh’s U11 hardball team and Copthill at Uffington CC. We batted first, with George P and Giovani putting on 18 runs without losing a wicket, with the latter scoring his first boundary in hardball cricket. The following pairs put on runs steadily and we reached a total of 203 (starting at 100), rounded off nicely with George C scoring his first boundary in hardball cricket too. However, we lost 6 wickets, the majority to being bowled - possibly playing across the line to straight deliveries (though it’s tricky to tell from the square leg umpiring position)! These six wickets counted as 30 extra runs to the opposition (5 runs per wicket, for those mathematically minded amongst you).
We bowled pretty well, with Giovani and George C both collecting their first hardball wickets. Catches were held (Seb), and run outs were well executed (George P) and the scores were like for like all through the innings. In the last, tense over, Copthill required five runs to win. Rory P trapped their batter LBW on the first ball to leave them needing ten from five balls. Rory kept it tight, apart from a careless no-ball, and they fell just three runs short. A fantastic, entertaining match played in a superb spirit between the two teams.
