U11 Hardball & Softball v Copthill (A) 2.00pm

Match Report

Softball

Result: Won both matches by 5 runs

On a mizzley and blustery June afternoon, two mixed U11 softball teams took on Copthill in a pair of closely contested matches. Despite the challenging weather conditions, both games were played in great spirit and enjoyed by everyone involved.  There were some excellent performances in the field, with Maddie, Edward, Charles, Annie and Gio all bowling particularly well, as well as Hetty and Gio making outstanding catches.
Arthur, Bonnie and Charles all batted very well, striking a wonderful assortment of boundaries, including several 4s and 6s.
Both matches went right down to the wire, with St Hugh’s securing victory by the narrowest of margins—winning each game by just 5 runs (equivalent to 1 wicket). An excellent afternoon of softball.

Hardball

Result: Won

With the storm clouds circling, we were fortunate to miss any rain and fitted in a full match. We batted first and found runs tricky to come by, amassing a total largely made up of extras. Our final pair of Ralph and Beau managed to get more bat on ball to give our total an air of respectability (263), however, throughout the innings we were guilty of giving wickets away far too cheaply (9 in total).
Fortunately, our bowling and fielding display was excellent. Wickets tumbled regularly and runs were restricted through accurate bowling, sharp fielding and some uncertain batting. I was most impressed by our restraint in throwing in at the stumps so as not to give away many overthrows on a fast outfield (their total - 216). Charlie S, Harriet T, George P and Ralph each managed to bag two wickets in an over. Beau was very astute behind the stumps and restricted the flow of runs; George P captained superbly again.
