Match Report

Result: 25 - 30 (5 tries - 6) L

Our U11 Boys' Rugby Team welcomed Ranby for the first home fixture of the season. We agreed to play four quarters and the boys took to the first team pitch excited for the challenge. St Hugh’s won the toss and opted to kick. Hard and direct running from Ranby rattled the St Hugh’s boys and some missed tackles saw Ranby squeak through for the first scores. Just before the whistle went for the first quarter Edward managed to find some space out wide to give St Hugh’s their first points. It was a bit of a wake up call for St Hugh’s but they responded well in the second. Both teams seemed to play with a bit more urgency and wanted to get hands on the ball. Some strong tackling and rucking resulted in a bit more ball for St Hugh’s and both teams were awarded a couple of tries. St Hugh’s came through - Edward when he found some space and Miles, tenacious ball carrying saw him go crashing through the Ranby defence. Game on! Going into the second half St Hugh’s trailed three tries to Ranby’s five. The defence and tackling in the third was immense, very physical and the St Hugh’s plays showed some great determination. It looked like there would be no tries in the third quarter, but then Sebastian popped up in some space and managed to get over the line before being chased down by the Ranby players. Into the final quarter and all to play for! Ranby kicked off and it was clear that both teams were throwing everything they had at the game. St Hugh’s responded early with an Edward break away try down the wing. This took the game to 25 - 25. With a home crowd of supporters cheering the St Hugh’s boys the atmosphere was electric. St Hugh’s tried to hold on, but a slipped tackle saw Ranby through for their 6th try of the match. St Hugh’s had another attack just before the whistle, but were unable to come away with any points. Final score, 25 - 30. An absolutely fantastic game of Rugby - the boys did the school and the team very proud. Well done!
