Match Report

U11 - L 25 - 45 (5 tries - 9)

The U11 team welcomed Wisbech Grammar School for the first rugby 7’s fixture. St Hugh’s lost the toss and were given the kick off. The U11 team went after the game in the first quarter tackling everything and with the ball in hand looked dangerous. Before the whistle went for the first quarter St Hugh’s had managed to run in 4 tries. The second quarter was very different as Wisbech started to warm into the game a few unforced errors saw St Hugh’s lose the ball and Wisbech were able to capitalise on this, the second quarter ending 3 tries to 1 in favour of Wisbech. The third quarter St Hugh’s played with great determination but were unable to convert this to points. With some strong carries and good lines of running saw Wisbech completed 4 tries. Giving them a 2 try lead going into the final quarter. Both teams threw everything into the last quarter, playing some great 7’s rugby. Wisbech attacked hard and eventually broke through the St Hugh’s defense. Fantastic display of rugby 7’s by both teams. Well done to all players involved.

U13 - L 25 - 35 (5 tries - 7)

Next serving of 7’s for the U13 boys was Wisbech at home. St Hugh’s boys knew that this would be a tough game following our meeting in the close of the 13’s season. The U13 boys required this challenge, so went into the game confidently captained by Rupert. The start of the first quarter was not as we had hoped. Wisbech came out strong and before the whistle had managed to gather a convincing lead with 3 tries. After a good talk about what was going well and what we needed to focus on, St Hugh's went back out to it. This quarter was very promising with some strong carries and impressive offloads, St Hugh’s found space and were able to score 3 tries to Wisbech’s 1 in the second quarter. Into the third quarter and there was not much separating the two teams. Both teams attacked well when in possession the difference was slipped tackles which St Hugh’s gave away a few. The quarter finished 2 tries to Wisbech and 1 to St Hugh’s. Heading into the final quarter Wisbech had a 2 try lead. St Hugh’s U13’s played with tremendous effort and determination but were unable to catch Wisbech. Both teams scored a well executed try each to end a great quarter and the game. Well done to all the players, some great rugby on display.
