U11 Boys - 3rd

A team of 24 St Hugh’s runners travelled to Copthill on Wednesday afternoon for their annual invitational cross country event. This is always a popular run which sees pupils complete an undulating course over 1.3km (U9) or 2.4km (U11). This includes an epic steep climb, and although short, it is a real test given the flat land we are used to here!

Every St Hugh’s runner put in an incredible shift and dug deep to ensure they achieved the position they were capable of. With eleven schools in attendance and a high calibre of schools, this was the most competitive race so far this season. Once again, to see our small school competing so well against some much larger schools is a credit to them.

St Hugh’s were delighted to place 2nd in the U9 Girls category following a fantastic team performance which saw captain, Valentina, crossing the line in 3rd place. This incredible performance was supported by Lucy, Georgia and Ottilie to give us our team score. Ophelia and Tilly also finished in quick succession. The girls missed out on 2nd place by just a point!

Our U9 Boys had a tough afternoon but nonetheless battled hard right through to the finish line. It was the captain, George P, who crossed the line as our first runner in 16th place. Some tough competition but great experience.

Following their victory on home turf last week, the U11 girls approached this race with confidence though perhaps felt the pressure a little! It was Hollie F who took our top position this week in 10th place, followed very closely by Harriet in 13th. Bella and Cecily dug deep as our 3rd and 4th counter and this team effort saw us finish in 4th place. A creditable performance given the standard. Abi gave 100% in her usual way, showing great grit and determination.

Finally, the U11 Boys took to the start line. Captain, Beau, approached the race with confidence following his winning performance at our cross country event last week. However, this race saw perhaps the most competition with Ratcliffe College who were a force to be reckoned with. With their top four finishers achieving 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place, Beau had his work cut out! He ran his own race and did exceptionally well to get in the top 6. Another outstanding performance came from Edward R who crossed the line in 17th, followed by Vinny in 19th and Gio in 21st. These four scores saw St Hugh’s achieve 3rd place position which was a fantastic team effort given the calibre of runners. Edward P and George C worked tirelessly around the course and dug deep in the final stretch.

A huge well done to every runner for representing yourself and your school so well!
