Result: 7 - 0 (35 - 0) W, 3 - 1 (15 - 5)
St Hugh’s U13 boys opened their season with a home fixture against Oakham. The boys welcomed Oakham to the hallowed turf in style with a tunnel to meet and greet the visiting side. The game kicked off and both teams took a while to get into their stride. The first five minutes saw handling errors by both teams, so lots of scrummaging was required. These were uncontested to ensure the safety of the players. Once the boys had enough of scrummaging St Hugh’s played some lovely rugby. Turning the ball over cleanly at breakdowns and whipping it through the hands saw the pressure build and gaps open up. St Hugh’s ran in seven tries before the half time whistle and looked very comfortable. In order to provide a good quality experience for all players we mixed things up a bit. St Hugh’s provided Oakham with half of their squad and Oakham provided St Hugh’s with half of theirs. The second half was fantastic to behold, credit to all the boys for getting stuck in and integrating well with their new teams. We witnessed some great lines of running, some solid tackling and some creative offloads. The second half finished 3 tries to 1.
