Match Reports
U8 Tag: 2 mixed teams
Result: Blues: 10-10 draw, Reds: 4-11 L
Our first fixture saw the boys full of excitement, ready to play their first school rugby match. Both teams played promisingly with some excellent tagging and swift running with the ball. I was really pleased that the boys got to grips with the rules so readily and could organise themselves into their positions at restarts with little need for instruction. There were a few forward passes but, in general, both teams played with great concentration. A little more passing to involve other members of the team will be a target for us in the coming weeks.
U9 Rugby
Result: Loss
Our U9 boys travelled to Ranby House on Wednesday to play in their first fixture of the season. As per the RFU age grade regulations, the game now includes contact. Though it was very early on in the season, the boys have had an introduction to tackling during games and they were keen to apply this in the match. Tacklers of the match have to go to Edward R and Beau B-W who made a number of super tackles! We were a little tentative to start, but as the match progressed, each player became more confident. It was good to see Beau taking a lead as captain, particularly when it came to ensuring the boys adopted a good defensive line on the turnover. Individually, it was great to see players running with the ball and we did find the try line on a number of occasions. At times, the boys found themselves offside so this is an area to develop before our next match. Well done to all players.
U10 Rugby
Result: L 4-3
Our first game of the season, with new rules, including more than one player at the tackle and the introduction to rucks. We started very brightly and soon scored a nice try through Edward J. There were some excellent tackles, particularly from Rory and Edmund showed good awareness when passing the ball from the rucks. We won the first half 3-1. The second half was very close and we almost scored a number of times. Ranby did go over the line three times which meant they came out 4-3 winners but it could easily have been 4-3 to us. An impressive start to the season.
U11 Rugby
Result: Loss
A very competitive game but it was a tale of two players. In this case, two flyers who had pace to burn and were able to put Ranby in a comfortable position simply by getting the ball in space. Missed first up tackles gave them momentum and, despite brave attempts to do, so it wasn’t possible to track them down once they got in to space. A brave effort though from all of the boys who played who did so for the whole game with no substitutions. Stand out performances were to George and Rory, as well as to Ellis who stood firm in the centre against some strong, and tall, opposition. We learnt much about quick ball, not getting sucked into contact and also about playing in the opposition half and holding on to the ball. Looking forward to next week, we shall see what training brings.
