Report

It was great to see our senior pupils competing in their second event of the cross country season on Friday. We travelled to Louth to compete in the Coastal and Wolds Superzone District Cross Country, which was another new addition to the calendar.

Though we did not have the numbers for full teams, our pupils ran as individuals. The top 16 finishers in each age group at this event qualify for the next stage held at Burghley House in January, where they will represent the Coastal and Wolds District. We were delighted to have five out of nine runners achieve a place.

First up were our Y7 girls, Kitty and Annabelle who completed a one lap course of 2401m. It was great to see both of them get a strong start to form a lead pack amongst a large field of runners. It was Kitty who emerged first leading the field with a relatively large gap. She held this position well for a large part of the race until she was caught at the top of a long incline. She stuck in but couldn’t catch the eventual winner. She finished in a very creditable second place, qualifying comfortably for the next round! Annabelle worked hard over the course and managed to maintain a top ten position throughout. She definitely left nothing in the tank, crossing the line in 8th, also achieving her place at Burghley.

The Y7 boys followed with Rupert, Charlie and Will L taking to the start line. The boys had a challenging 3284m course which was an additional half lap. Rupert emerged as the first St Hugh’s runner but had some work to do to get himself up into the top ten. He worked away and did well to close the gap. Rupert coped well on the incline and put in a shift to get himself in the top ten. A super 6th place and qualification for Rupert. Charlie and Will had a good run and stayed within relatively close proximity throughout. It was good to see them persevering around a tough course and they finished in 23rd and 24th respectively.

Next up were our Y8 girls who also stepped up to the 1.5 lap course, covering a distance of 3284m. It is a little more gruelling for the Y8s given they are combined at this age group with Y9s.  However, it came as no surprise that Florence crossed the line in first place with a significant lead - she appeared to even challenge the hare! Florence will run at Burghley and will be aiming to qualify for both Anglian and English Schools. Charlotte T ran very well, especially given she had just recovered from illness earlier in the week. She ran in the lead pack for the majority of the course and did exceptionally well to finish 6th overall. Charlotte will join Florence at the next event, running for the district. It was fabulous to see Grace join the Y8 girls for this event. Grace has been competing in some parkruns and opted to race which is great. She was pleased with her run and it was great to see her finishing strongly!

Last up was Aydin, who was our only St Hugh’s competitor for the Y8/9 boys' category. Aydin had a gruelling two laps to complete, totalling 4239m. In his usual style, Aydin gave it everything he had and despite running against some strong athletes and older boys, he dug in and performed well. Though he did not qualify, he is a year young so hopefully he will continue his running when he moves to his next school and get another chance at this.

Overall a successful afternoon for the St Hugh’s runners. We look forward to seeing how they perform for the district in January where they have the chance to go on to represent Lincolnshire Schools. Well done.
