Year 8 Visit to RAF Digby

Year 8 were very lucky to be able to visit RAF Digby Ops Room museum for their history topic on WW2. After eating our lunch in the Station Commander's Conference Room we headed down to the museum to see how the Ops Room would have worked during the war, Many of the furnishings and objects there were the genuine articles from the 1940s. Flight Sergeant Stu gave us a quick but informative talk about the room before we tried to identify different aircraft using models and a reference chart of silhouettes. Then pupils had the chance to explore the museum and try to answer the questions Sergeant Hanna had set for us. Finally, our guides for the day arranged a wartime scenario for the Ops Room and the pupils had to carry out their allotted roles. Camilla revelled in being the Controller - donning an important-looking cap and giving out orders to all and sundry, George and Josh equally enjoyed telling their underlings to be quiet (with varying degrees of success!) and Rory was up and down the ladder like a yo-yo trying his best to keep the tote board updated. We were also fortunate to have the Deputy Station Commander come and talk to us all about the role of the RAF today, and he came away very impressed by the probing questions asked of him.

Many thanks to FS Stu and Sgt Hanna for putting together and organising the activities and also for Sgt (PTI) Heaton (Sam's mum!) for hosting us so well, arranging the day and organising our seamless entry onto and around the base.
