Match Report
Team A - Result - Stamford 280 St Hugh’s 210
Stamford arrived with seven players so some adjustments had to be made to ensure an even number of overs were played by each team. Their first pair of batters looked assured and they started soundly in their four over stint, only succumbing to a sharp run out by Seb off his own bowling. Sharing the bowling out so that all players bowled at least one over each, we found the wickets hard to come by, though there were several highlights - Miles bagged a nice catch and collected a wicket from his bowling, George P bamboozled several batters with his spin, Alastair looked assured in his first game as keeper, and Rory got a sharp run out and a wicket from his last over - which was bowled again to Stamford’s opening pair as two of their other players declined to bat!
All of our players batted in their pairs and we also lent Stamford two fielders (including Beau who took a good catch at mid-off!!). Facing some nippy bowlers we found runs hard to accumulate. Added to this was rather careless shot selection against straight deliveries. Therefore, wickets fell with alarming regularity. Rory and April stemmed the tide somewhat as the last pair, with the former peppering the boundary and the latter playing a solid supporting role.
A tough afternoon, but it clearly highlighted a need for practice in protecting our wicket.
Team B - Result - Stamford 120 St Hugh’s 112
An absolute scorcher of a day on the Wothorpe Astro. We had two innings, a standard one and then a one over per pair bash, culminating in a very tight result. As I said to them after, the difference was 4 wides, or 8 missed singles. We played really well and they enjoyed the game, with Tara nominated as the opposition’s Players’ Player. Some good hitting, improving bowling and some super catches kept us in the game and also showed a lot of promise for the season. Well done all.
