U11 IAPS Tennis @ Clifton College, Bristol (A)

Match Report

Another new event to our calendar this year saw some of our accomplished tennis players travelling to Clifton College, Bristol, for the Annual IAPS U11 Tournament. Beau, Edward, Harriet and Verity competed for the school in what proved to be a large-scale event with some exceptional tennis on show. Players were ranked according to their LTA rating in an attempt to provide suitable competition for all involved. The day saw four round robin groups for the boys and five for the Girls, with singles matches in the morning followed by doubles in the afternoon. Our boys were placed in the ‘B’ group and girls in the ‘D’ group.

In the boys competition, both Beau and Edward faced strong opposition given their group placing, facing players from Tockington Manor, Hall Grove and Ratcliffe College. There was some super tennis on display and the boys conducted themselves exceptionally well on and off court. Beau managed to secure wins all round following some tightly contested points and it was a real privilege to watch the level of tennis that was on display. Edward had a tough draw given that he found himself in the same group as Beau but he approached this with an open mind and demonstrated great resilience over the course of the morning. His final game was a far closer encounter and it was great to see Edward battling hard to secure some well deserved points. Edward came into his own in the afternoon when the boys paired up to play doubles. With some well thought out tactics, the St Hugh’s team worked incredibly well together and it was an exciting watch!

The girls had lots of success in their singles matches with some confident wins all round. They faced players from Framlingham College, Hazelgrove and Bedales. As the morning progressed, they became more confident in their calls and the girls also conducted themselves extremely well on court. It was just as lovely to see them making new friends and enjoying spending time with the opposition after their match! In the doubles round robin, Harriet and Verity were a force to be reckoned with and they secured some confident wins before the final game of the afternoon which was closely fought against Framlingham College. The girls were unfortunate not to take the win but were delighted to be awarded Silver medals for finishing 2nd place in their group.

Overall, a really positive experience for our pupils who approached the competition with optimism, displaying many of our school values and representing themselves and the school exceptionally well. Thank you to the parents who made the long journey to support all the children - such positive support is so valuable and makes a real difference to the pupils' experience. Well done, Team St Hugh’s!
