Match Report
Result: (Boys) Won 2 Lost 1
We started against Tranby and, batting first, we got off to a flying start with Rory P and Josh F putting together an unbeaten partnership until Rory had to retire at 28 not out. Josh reached 12 not out with Alastair also unbeaten on 2. After our allotted five overs we had reached a big total of 60 runs. Tranby, who had some inexperienced cricketers, put up a good defence and it wasn’t until the fourth over that Beau made the first breakthrough by bowling their opener. Seb also picked up a wicket in the final over to see us to victory.
The second game against the hosts, Pocklington, was a very close affair. Rory P again opened the batting, this time supported by Beau, and again he did not lose his wicket with an unbeaten 19 runs. There was urgency and good communication between the wickets enabling us to garner useful quick singles here and there. Our total this time was 41. Pocklington batted well and hit several boundaries to put the pressure on us until, again, Beau bowled their opener. It all came down to the last over with Pocklington needing 6 runs to win. Seb then trapped their other opener with an LBW (which in all fairness Rory had really deserved with the first ball of the innings), and from then on Seb bowled dot balls to prevent Pocklington surpassing our total.
The final match against Terrington was even more nerve-jangling. They batted first and though they scored some boundaries, our fielding was lively - epitomised by George P’s sharp run out of their opening batter off his own bowling. Alastair kept wicket superbly, especially in stemming any extras down the leg side. Terrington set us a target of 40 runs. Alastair and Josh opened this time, and though we did not lose a wicket until the end of the third over, the run rate needed to increase in order to achieve victory. Again, it went to the last over but this time to the last ball - with new batter Seb needing 4 runs when facing his first and only delivery. It was a tough ask, and though he connected well with the ball, it was fielded well and we could not quite reach the required 40 runs. Nevertheless, a really exciting game that tested the nerves of players and spectators alike.
It was a fantastic day of short, competitive cricket matches against teams we rarely come up against - a very enjoyable afternoon. The boys showed great attributes in their batting, accuracy in their bowling and above all, togetherness as a team.
Result: (Girls) Tranby Win 39/3 to 33/1
Pocklington Loss 29/1 to 38/1
Terrington Win 45/2 to 19/2
A team of six girls competed in the Annual Pocklington 6s on Wednesday which saw them face three schools over the course of the afternoon. It was great to play schools we would not usually come across and the girls enjoyed the experience of the Sixes Format.
April captained the team and won the toss for St Hugh’s to open the bowling against Tranby. The rules stipulated all players to bowl an over (apart from the wk) and though we were a little inaccurate at times, the girls grew in confidence throughout the afternoon, taking four wickets over the three games. This included three catches (Faith, Harriet, Coco) and a Run Out. Though we didn’t bowl anyone out there were some close encounters. Verity kept wicket well for two games, as did Faith for the other. We were quiet in the field so this is definitely an area to develop going forwards, including backing up when fielding the ball in from the outfield.
Our batting was good, with boundaries scored by Harriet, Verity and Penny including a 6 from Verity. The girls became better at communicating with their fellow batswomen and a number of singles were scored as a result.
A great afternoon of cricket with two wins and one loss. Well done, girls.
