Match Report

U13A W 3-1
U13B D 2-2

On a lovely Spring afternoon the boys hockey teams travelled to Worksop College.  With only 14 boys available, it was two teams of 7 with no subs.  Obviously no rotation to keep the boys fresh is possible, but it does have the advantage of everyone knowing their role and where their teammates are likely to be.

The A team with Toby in goal, defenders of Charles and William C, Captain Max in the centre of the park and a forward line of Rupert, Euan and Fergus.
Unfortunately, as usual(!), for the first 10 minutes we were unable to keep possession and kept passing  the ball to the opposition.  Toby made some fine saves and kept us in the contest until they finally breached our defence on 10 minutes.

Three minutes later Rupert broke into their D and got a couple of shots off, but it was Max who finally got the ball over the line. Four minutes later Euan fed Rupert on the back post and he swept the ball home.  We were growing into the game.

The half time team talk consisted of our forwards not pressing too high and therefore keeping numbers behind the ball.  This worked well and we looked much more of a solid unit.  Charles and William were both playing one of their best games of the season under Toby’s vocal tutelage!

On 13 minutes in the second half Fergus had a run down the right and then he fed Euan who scored.  Our understanding of game management improved as the clock ticked to full time. It was a really positive 3-1 win in what is usually a tricky fixture.
The B team had to work hard in this weeks match. It took us a while to find our rhythm and structure, but once we did, things started to come together. Rory was a key player, consistently working the line and driving the ball into the D. His hard work paid off when he scored a well-earned goal. And George also found the back of the net with a crucial strike.
Josh was on fire in goal, making it incredibly difficult for the opposition to score. His quick reactions and solid positioning kept them at bay. Sam also made a crucial contribution, pulling off a super impressive dive to prevent a goal after Josh had committed to an attacker. It was a strong team performance, and the effort from everyone was clear throughout the match.
