U8 & U9 Rugby v Ayscoughfee Hall (H) 2.15pm

Match Report

U8s

The U8s put in a fantastic performance against Ascoughfee, showing great teamwork and impressive improvement from recent training sessions. All the boys played exceptionally well, with Raphael, Monty R, and Reuben making some brilliant runs to score well-deserved tries.
St Hugh’s defensive line was strong throughout, applying consistent pressure and making it difficult for Ascoughfee to break through. Toby and Hugo both crossed the line for excellent tries, while Jack and Monty K showed real progress by using the passing skills practised in training to move the ball effectively. Barnaby was outstanding with his tagging, helping to shut down several attacking moves.
Overall, it was a great game played in fantastic spirit—well done to all the boys!

U9s

Having deemed the pitches unplayable earlier in the morning, the U9 boys were delighted to see them thaw out in preparation for their fixture in the afternoon against Ayscoughfee Hall. This was not the first time they have met Ayscoughfee this season and it was great to welcome them back to the St Hugh’s turf!

With Asycoughfee not delivering contact rugby, we met half way and requested a touch game with some additional contact elements. This was a lovely opportunity for our boys to demonstrate some of their skills to the Ayscoughfee boys as we progressed over the course of the afternoon. This included how to parachute fall which they enjoyed demonstrating after the first quarter. The game progressed seeing the boys performing a touch, go to ground, present the ball and pass off.

Although the new rules slowed the game down a little initially, both teams soon got to grips with it and began to get the ball passed quickly following a ‘tackle’.  They also showed great games awareness in terms of getting back on side quickly.

It was a pleasure to referee this game and see our St Hugh’s team supporting one another - we are beginning to offload before the tackle too which is creating some challenges for the opposition's defence.

Well done, boys, the progress you have made this season has been tremendous. We look forward to some fun set matches next week before our final fixture with Burton Hathow in the final week of term.
