Match Reports

U8 Mixed Tag Rugby Team

We played two even matches where tries were scored in almost tit-for-tat fashion. Our tagging was pretty sharp and on several occasions we came very close to achieving a turnover by getting six tags in succession before a try was scored. We also exploited the spaces on the pitch very well, and almost every player ran clear at one point in the matches and put the ball down for a score. Support for the ball-carrier improved as the afternoon went on; perhaps now we can try to pass before being tagged to produce more free-flowing, team-orientated rugby.

U9 Rugby Team

Results:

  • St Hugh's v WGS: W 4 - 1 (20 - 5)
  • WGS v RAN: 0 - 3 (0 - 15)
  • RAN v St Hugh's: L 7 - 5 (35 - 25)

The scene was set for a great afternoon of rugby and to host both Wisbech and Ranby was a delight. Wisbech arrived first so after a warm up we got the game underway. Wisbech were unable to offer a contact game so we played the first half as touch and the second as touch - parachute fall. In the first half, St Hugh’s players linked up really well scoring three really well worked tries. The second half was more evenly matched with Wisbech scoring one and then St Hugh’s wrapping up the game with a final score on the board.

St Hugh’s had a breather whilst Wisbech and Ranby played, with the same game conditions in place to protect and support the players. This was another great game with Ranby scoring three and Wisbech unfortunately unable to get across the white wash in this game.

The results from the previous games should have meant that we were in for a treat with the final game of the afternoon. And Wow! St Hugh’s and Ranby did not disappoint. The game was full U9 laws, so contact which both teams relished. It was end to end rugby with St Hugh’s scoring first, but then Ranby responded with a try and this went on pretty much throughout the whole game. It was a spectacle of rugby with some great lines of running, good support play and some fantastic tackling. The game got to 5 - 5 and then the ball was turned over to Ranby because of some handling errors and they managed to sneak in another two tries to take the game 7 - 5. Result aside, super proud of all the St Hugh’s boys and Ranby players for giving us a fantastic game to be a part of, thank you and well done!

U10 Rugby Team

Results: L 4-3 V Wisbech, D 4-4 V Ranby

We hosted both Ranby and Wisbech in a triangular festival. The first match was St Hugh’s v Wisbech; it was a very physical match with some big tackles from both sides. There were some long passages of play with a number of turn-overs with both sides rucking very well. Rory and Josh made some determined runs and there was never more than one try in it. In the end, Wisbech came out winners 4-3.

We then played Ranby who the boys informed them had beaten them every time they had played!  We started the game really strongly with two excellent individual tries from Edward; he then added a third to reach half time 3-1 up. Ranby came back strongly after half time and levelled up the scores. Edward then scored his fourth try with a couple of minutes remaining, only for Ranby to score the equaliser in the last few seconds. A great game and our best result against Ranby!

U11 Rugby Team

Results: 2-2 v WGS, 4-5  v Ranby

Two “proper” games today - really physical games of rugby and the team really stood out as having made huge progress. Again, the focus was on quick ball so recycling in contact was the aim of the game and it paid dividends with Rory, James, Ellis and George all able to find space on a pitch where the defence was solid. Supported by a rampaging Sam H, the whole team put in a very committed shift against two teams who were able to freshen their legs up with the use of a couple of subs. Joshua played at his elusive best on the wing, coming in with some deceptive steps which wrongfooted the opposition and Edward followed up his performance last week with another solid one where he made breaks and moved the ball well when caught. It’s been a delight to watch them learn and progress - the rugby has been fluid and, even if there is the odd time when we drop it and make mistakes, we play on. It is a pleasure to coach a side who is willing to learn and even more so when they drive the games themselves. Well done and thank you again to the parents for coming out, we can’t promise mulled wine every week!
