It was another impressive performance by the St Hugh’s runners this week with three out of four teams placing in the Ayscoughfee invitational cross country. Though the sun was shining on our arrival the skies very quickly turned for the worst ready for our opening U9 girls event! Despite the cold, damp conditions every runner showed grit and determination over the course.
The U9 girls demonstrated great strength with a large team of eight runners. With the top four runners' scores contributing to the overall team result, the girls battled hard against one another. This paid off with St Hugh’s in second place following a fabulous effort from all. Our top four finishers were Hollie (4), Valentina (5), Jemima (8), and Cecily (11). The other four runners were not far behind - Annie (13), Abi (14), Lucy (17), and Bonnie (20).
Next up were the U9 boys who unfortunately were depleted in numbers due to a couple of injuries this week. Nonetheless they worked incredibly hard over the duration of the race and it was great to see them digging deep in the final stretch. Like the girls, all boys achieved a top 20 place - Freddie (13), Joseph (14), Joshua W (17), Harry (19) and Bertie (20).  This put them in 4th Place overall.
The U11s faced a tough two lap course which is always a bit of a mental challenge especially for those in Year 5. However the St Hugh’s girls were a force to be reckoned with. From early on in the race the white shirts emerged from the front of the pack. Genevieve showed great form to catch the lead runner approaching the second lap and opened the gap substantially for the remainder of the race. An outstanding first place performance from her this week. The rest of the team also impressed and it was Arabella who came in as our second St Hugh’s runner in an amazing second place overall. It was then a battle between the remaining four St Hugh’s runners who challenged each far other better this week. It was a particularly pleasing run for Penelope who achieved third place overall and Harriet in 5th, Coco in 6th and Faith in 8th. What a team! It came as no surprise that St Hugh’s won the category by a huge margin!
The final race of the afternoon was our U11 boys who went out determined to be placed having been runners up at Copthill last week. With some tough competition from Laxton and Bourne the St Hugh’s runners had their work cut out to get into the leading pack. Beau led the St Hugh’s team running with good style and a competitive attitude. Though he closed the gap with the top three runners he couldn’t quite catch them but finished in a creditable fourth place. Our second runner in was Beau’s Year 5 teammate Gio (7) who looked strong throughout the race. Our next two counters included Joshua F (12) and Seb (13) which equated to a 3rd place finish. Edward R (14) followed in quick succession and it was great to see Edward P (24) join the team this week who had a remarkable run towards the finish line.
Overall a spectacular performance from the whole St Hugh’s team and we look forward to Stamford on Friday to bring the cross country season to a close!
