Match Report

Red Team

Result: W 260-243

The team travelled to Ranby for their fixture and were excited to show their hard work in our recent games sessions. We have been working on making ‘sneaky’ runs and communicating fully.
St Hugh’s started as fielders with Harvey bowling first. His accurate bowling and quick reactions from the fielders kept Ranby to no runs. In the second over Joseph made a super run to the wicket and outran a confused batting pair. The bowling was accurate and improved which was super to see. Freddie H had outstanding bowling with a clean, accurate technique that benefited the team. In the fourth over Joseph successfully got another wicket. Hugo was an asset to the team and had a clean bowling over with one of his six being a wicket. At the end of our fielding Ranby had scored 243 and St Hugh’s were on the chase.
Freddie S and Harvey were up first to bat. Some great communication to start the over with and Freddie hit a 4. Anna and Bonnie were next and were able to utilise some misfielding to make some extra runs. Third was Joseph and Hugo. After last week's success as a pair it was great to see this continue on the field. Hugo had a strong connection with the ball, striking two fours and the pair getting a few extra runs. George and Freddie H were a super batting pair scoring two fours each and several extra runs. Despite a good effort by the end of the fourth over we were down by 10. Hugo and Freddie H batted again and had an outstanding two overs. Freddie scored 2 more 4’s and Hugo two 4’s and a 6. It was a perfect end to a great afternoon of cricket from the whole team. St Hugh’s ended the match with a win of 260. Freddie H was awarded the opposition's player and should be incredibly proud of his first ever cricket match! Well done all!

Blue Team

On Wednesday afternoon, our U9 cricket team travelled to Ranby for an exciting match, with perfect weather on our side as the sun made an appearance. St Hugh’s chose to field first, sending Otto and Bertie to open the bowling attack. Both bowlers showed impressive technique, applying everything they've learned in games sessions to great effect.
The St Hugh’s fielding was great, with the team working together to prevent Ranby from accumulating too many runs. Willow, Abi, and Jonty also bowled brilliantly, keeping the pressure on Ranby. The fielders, including Valentina and Bea, were quick to react, with both making crucial stops, even managing to save a boundary with their long barriers.
At the end of the first innings, Ranby had set a target of 41 runs for St Hugh’s to chase.
When it was our turn to bat, Otto and Bertie started strong. On his very first ball, Otto hit a superb four! The pair continued to run well and hit some boundaries, building a solid partnership. Next up were Willow and Jonty, who displayed excellent decision-making, picking the right moments to take singles and push for runs. They ended their two overs with a solid total of 13 runs. Abi and Valentina were up next and showed great awareness, sneaking in extra runs whenever the ball was misfielded. Miss Kilby was particularly impressed with their quick thinking and sharp running between the wickets. Finally, Maya and Bea rounded off the batting with a fantastic display, adding another 11 runs to St Hugh’s total.
By the end of the second innings, St Hugh’s had successfully chased down the target, finishing with a total of 61 runs, securing a well-deserved win.

The yellow and blue team played 2 mixed friendly games so every child at Ranby and St Hugh’s were involved in a match. It was lovely to see the children mixing together and working as a team.
This was the first cricket match for most of the children and they certainly made significant progress over the afternoon.
Accurate bowling from Lana, Monaco, Lola and Josh.
Josh connected well with the bat and found the boundary on many occasions and excellent running between the wickets.
The children were a pleasure to coach and it was lovely to see them chatting and making friends with Ranby pupils.
