It was a superb performance at Ayscoughfee Hall for our last race of the cross country season. St Hugh’s dominated in all four categories with some outstanding individual runs and a great team effort! With eight individuals finishing top 3, everyone else top 12, and all four teams coming 1st place - the St Hugh’s contingent were on fire!

First up were the U9 Girls who have had a super season. Harriet, Penelope, Faith, Coco and Olivia set the bar high, with all runners finishing in the top 11. It was Harriet T, once again, who showed great stamina over the 1.2k course finishing in an impressive 1st place, leading the pack from the outset. Following her, was our other Y3 team member, Faith, who demonstrated real grit and determination throughout. Penelope was unlucky to have a fall near the start but in true Penelope style, she got back up and worked her way towards the lead pack. She finished in a very close 3rd place, a commendable comeback! Next to cross the line was Coco who worked extremely hard to stick with her teammates this week. She finished as our fourth counter in an impressive 5th place.  Olivia dug in with a smile on her face as usual and was pleased to achieve 11th place. This gave the St Hugh’s team a superb team score of 11  and the girls were delighted to be presented with a shield as winners! This team was the highest scoring team of the afternoon.

Next up were the U9 boys who have also had a successful season, both as individuals and as a team. Unfortunately, we were missing Rory due to injury so with just four boys we knew all places were to count. It was Sebastian who led the pack this week, demonstrating a great pace over the course and holding his position over the finish line. Our only Y3 team member, Beau, worked away up the ranks to get himself into the lead pack, followed closely by Joshua who looked particularly strong this week. Our fourth runner was Edward J and we knew with 1st, 3rd and 5th places in the bag, it was looking promising. Edward finished well in 12th place giving the boys the win they deserved! A winning score of 21.

The U11 category saw the runners completing two laps of the course, a total of 2.2km. With plenty of support from our U9 teams and energetic parents (thanks Mr Thomas!), both the boys and girls coped incredibly well. Charlotte and Kitty had an extremely close race and it was great to see them working together and pushing each other on. Kitty led for a spell with Charlotte taking the lead in the second lap. On approaching the final stretch, Kitty kept Charlotte close and eventually passed her on the finishing straight. However, Charlotte managed to claw back and crossed the line first. An outstanding performance from this pair! Millie also impressed with a confident run and made a great contribution to the team score as 4th finisher. Our final counter was Olivia and it was super to see her digging in to the very end, finishing in an impressive 6th place. A fabulous team effort, with a winning score of 13!

Finally, it was the U11 boys to take to the start line, perhaps with a little pressure given they had just witnessed three St Hugh’s wins out of three! Did they disappoint? Of Course not! With a very strong runner from the host school, our boys were pushed hard at the start and it was good to see them slowly emerging amongst the pack. Rupert gradually worked his way forward to gain a good position for the majority of the course alongside two other runners. Though he didn’t manage to catch the leader, it was a strong finish into the line to secure his medal. James, as our only Y5 runner, was second home for the team. He worked hard around the course and finished in a pleasing 5th place. He was closely followed by AJ and Charlie, who both finished top 10 to give the team a score of 22. Though this was a closer affair with only one point in it, I am pleased to confirm that the U11 boys were also victorious!

A tremendous end to a very successful cross country season. Well done to every runner, your hard work at running club has certainly paid off! We look forward to Athletics and Duathlon next term!
