The School Week

Our broad curriculum is designed to stimulate, inspire and challenge our pupils throughout their time with us, whilst preparing them for future success.

Nursery

The Nursery day begins at 8.30am, with the first session finishing at 11.30am.  Lunch is from 11.30am – 12.30pm and the afternoon session starts at 12.30pm and finishes at 3.30pm.  If you need a slightly earlier start to the day children can join our Breakfast Club, from 7.40am where they enjoy a hearty cooked breakfast with our boarders, and are then taken to class by our staff. We also have an After School Club which runs from 3:30pm – 5:20pm and includes a cooked tea.

Reception to Year 2

Here at St Hugh’s School, from Reception to Year 2, the school week runs from Monday to Friday, starting at 8.25am and finishing at 3.30pm. The majority of the day is spent with the class teacher though the children move to different parts of the school for specialist teaching in ICT, music, PE, science and swimming (French is taught by a subject specialist but in the classroom). Lunch takes place in the dining hall with the children having the opportunity each day to choose from a range of freshly cooked meals or salad. At 3.30pm the children are ready for collection from the classroom though some remain for stay and play. There are two assemblies, a general one on Monday and a class assembly on Thursday which parents are encouraged to attend.

Years 3 and 4

In Years 3 and 4, the school week continues from Monday to Friday but lessons now run through to 4.10pm on every day except Wednesday. This allows the curriculum to be broadened, particularly with regards to Art, Forest School and Games with subject specialists in these areas being introduced. Wednesday afternoon focuses on games with matches against other schools, both home and away, often being played. Children also start to become more involved with choirs and orchestras in Years 3 and 4 as well as getting the opportunity to have individual music lessons.

Hobbies also begin more formally in Year 3, taking place from 4.10pm until 5pm for Years 3 to 8 every day except Wednesday.

Years 5 – 8

Prep is introduced at the end of Year 5 with Years 6, 7 and 8 having an hour of prep each evening. This reinforces the work done in the classroom and many of the children choose to do this in school as there is a member of staff available to help them.

A separate hobby programme takes place for those children who are boarding from 6.30-7.30pm each day. On a Thursday evening pupils are able to attend Horncastle Hockey Club’s junior coaching sessions and will be taken to and from school on one of our minibuses.
