In Memoriam

Today, Tuesday 7th November, staff and pupils will line Cromwell Avenue to pay their respects to Allen Barr who sadly passed away on Wednesday 11th October. Following the cortège, our choir will be singing at the funeral being held at Alford Crematorium.

Many of our families will have known Allen either through his connection with the school as a former member of staff and Deputy Head or more recently through his daughter, Helen, who retired from St Hugh's in 2014 and who has been a frequent visitor to our events since her retirement.

Allen started working at St Hugh's in 1952 where he met his future wife, Jean, (who had started working here the previous year) and they married in 1953. Their four children all attended St Hugh's as pupils and Helen started working here in 1988.

He retired in 1992 and remained resident locally. He retained a great affection for the school and even in retirement was a regular visitor and spectator on the touchline of the rugby pitch – having been Master In Charge, this was a passion of his throughout his career. It was a privilege to show him around the school with some members of the senior rugby team in 2021 and his love of the school still remained clear to see.

I am sure that many former pupils, families, colleagues, governors and residents of the local area will miss him tremendously.

Our condolences are with his family.
