It was an extremely successful day for some of our most competent athletes on Thursday who travelled to the Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster. This is a qualifier for the National Prep Schools' Athletics Championships which are due to be held in July.

Charlotte, Aydin, Florence and Elliot all competed in their respective events as below.

  • Charlotte - Shot Putt
  • Aydin - Javelin
  • Florence - Long Jump and 1500m
  • Elliot - Javelin and Discus

In order to qualify for Nationals, athletes either need to place 1st in their event or finish 2nd and meet the National standard for their age group. Elliot and Florence had already met the National standard in their event(s) prior to Thursday, though had the pressure of knowing they needed to achieve 1st or 2nd place. Both Charlotte and Aydin had impressed during Athletics lessons and were close enough to the national standard to enter.

Charlotte threw well in the morning and though she did not achieve a personal best, she finished 2nd place overall for her age category. A great learning experience and something to work towards for next year. Aydin also threw extremely well and was pleased with his performance, also finishing 2nd overall for his age group.

Florence and Elliot both competed in two events. Unfortunately they are not allowed to compete in more than this, but it is worth highlighting that Florence would have met the national standard in a further two events (800m, 100m) should she have been able to.

Florence started with the Long Jump demonstrating great speed on the approach and achieved three successful measured jumps. Her furthest was just over the take off board so was not measured. She jumped an impressive 3.89m which met the standard but unfortunately for her, she did not place in the top two. She then faced the 1500m on the track in what were very tough conditions.  Florence started well and maintained a good position in the lead pack looking relaxed. In very hot conditions, she did incredibly well and gradually made her way past other athletes to finish in a creditable 2nd place. Had the race been longer, she looked like she may have caught the winner. Florence achieved an impressive personal best and given the heat, she was delighted with this run.  She smashed the six minute standard running 5:38s so will go to the Nationals in July!

Elliot also impressed in both the Javelin and Discus. With both events in the afternoon session, we made the decision to prioritise his Javelin. Elliot stepped up to perform his first throw of the afternoon, throwing an incredible 31.98m! This turned out to be his best throw putting him in a great position early on in the competition. Not only was this a super personal best for Elliot, but he also surpassed the national standard by 5.48m. He then had to make his way to the cage to throw the discus, by which time the majority of the field had completed their throws. Elliot stepped up and threw all three throws consecutively with his final throw being over 21 metres, a comfortable three metres over the standard. This was a personal best for Elliot and saw him win the competition by a clear margin. Elliot will now compete in both his events at the Nationals in July.

A huge well done to all competitors and congratulations to both Florence and Elliot for achieving the standards and securing a place at the National Prep Schools' Athletics Championships!
