Report:

Despite a rather wet journey to Worksop, the sun came out for a great afternoon of hockey on Wednesday.  It was the U9Ateam who faced Ranby in their first fixture of the season.

With a large cohort of very keen Year 3 and 4 players, it has been great to see the girls so eager during training!  Our Year 3 girls have certainly impressed us following a block of hockey sessions in the summer term led by Miss Hainsworth.

It was a real pleasure to watch the girls begin to bond as a team throughout the course of the game.  We became more hungry for the ball and this led to a number of goals being scored.  Well done to Ailsa, Elizabeth and Amelia who scored and to every other member of the team for contributing in other ways.  There were some super tackles made at the back, particularly from Florence and Amelia, who also distributed the ball using the width of the pitch. This was particularly evident in the final quarter, with Peyton receiving the ball on the left wing and creating further attacking opportunities.

The girls were delighted to win the game and finished the match on a high.  We concluded by thanking and congratulating our opposition and reflected together on the importance of being humble and showing good sportsmanship.

Report

The U11 A’s travelled to Worksop on Wednesday to start the Hockey season. The first match saw the team begin to find their feet against a disciplined Burton Hathow side. Against Ranby, St Hugh’s worked hard but conceded a goal to the opposition in the final minute. The U11 girls really switched on following this, upping their communication and teamwork skills enabling the ball to be carried towards goal much more efficiently. Brilliant work from the wing-backs (Beth and Penny) created multiple goal scoring opportunities. Excellent tracking back and defensive skills by Peyia helped St Hugh’s to keep possession. Helena and Lucy increased their movement up and down the pitch and Ruby’s work rate off the ball created spaces for her team to send the ball into. Annabel did a great job in goal, stopping multiple shots on goal throughout the final two games.

The afternoon was a roaring success, with St Hugh’s winning the tournament overall. Fantastic start to the season girls! Congratulations to Peyia for being this week’s star U11 A player.
