Success at the ESSA Qualifiers

St Hugh’s has qualified once again for the ESSA National Primary Swimming Finals in June following a great performance by our swimmers at Repton on Friday!

  • U11 4x25m Medley - 1st Place
  • U11 Freestyle Relay - 3rd Place
  • Qualified for National Finals in June in both events

Led by Captain, Charlotte J (Year 6), the team included Tabitha H-S (Year 6), George C (Year 6), Joshua F (Year 5) and Henry E (Year 5). This regional qualifying round saw the team swim in both the 4x25 Medley and 4x25m Freestyle Relay.

St Hugh’s falls into the ‘Small Schools’ category, competing against other similarly sized schools across the country. To qualify as a small school you must have less than sixty pupils in Year 5/6 combined, so with a cohort of just 32, we certainly put out a creditable performance.

We knew that the top three finishers in each category would qualify for the National Finals so it was great to be placed 1st and 3rd respectively in our events! An added bonus of the afternoon was meeting Eva Okaro, a Repton swimmer, who has just qualified for the Olympic Games in Paris. This was such an inspiring story for our swimmers, to think that she would have been competing in this competition just six years ago! Eva will be one of the youngest competitors at the games, Repton’s first ever Olympic swimmer and the first black women to represent GB in the pool at the olympics! You can read  more about Eva here.

We will travel to Sheffield in June to compete at Ponds Forge where we will be representing the East Midlands Division. Congratulations to all swimmers and we look forward to our next challenge.
