St. Hugh’s aims to provide a happy and stimulating environment in which children are able to fulfill their potential whilst they develop spiritually, mentally and physically. At the heart of all we do is the welfare of your child. We aim to provide a broad, stimulating curriculum which places great emphasis upon not only what your child can achieve in the class room but also looks to educate your child in all aspects of life. We attract well-trained and dedicated staff, who provide an extra dimension of care and commitment, within small well equipped classes in which we can cater for each child’s individual needs.
However, so much of what we do goes beyond the class room. St. Hugh's operates a policy of equal opportunities for all. We foster the traditional values of courtesy, honesty, hard work, independence, unselfishness and a sense of responsibility. We believe that living and working together in a co-educational boarding community whether as a day pupil or boarder, is a positive experience and a valuable education for life, where consideration for others and a spirit of service are important elements. Discipline is firm but friendly with clear recognition of the boundaries between right and wrong. Above all, we aim to create a happy and stable environment which complements the home so that the school works in close partnership with the parents of our pupils.
Pastoral care is shared by most members of the teaching staff. For boarders House Parents play the major pastoral role, although all children have several adults particularly concerned with their well-being, including a personal tutor with whom they meet to discuss their work.
We place great value on regular Christian teaching and encourage all our pupils to consider its relevance to their lives through our assemblies and Saturday church service. The school is closely connected with the Church of England although children of all denominations are equally welcome. The local vicar is a regular visitor to the school and prepares children who may wish to be confirmed.
